I have a Sovereign and I realize some of these coils don't translate well from the FBS to BBS machines and vise versa. However, I can find very little information on some of these coils in my searches in both the Sovereign forum and the Beach forum (where alot of Excalibur users linger). I'm primarily interested in a larger coil than the stock 10" Tornado to max out depth on coins. Mostly I'd be using this coil in cleaner areas of parks, woods, and fields were I suspect deeper coins exist based on my prior hunts.
What I'm mainly interested in is if there are any of the larger coils that seem to get WOT depth (or so near it that it's a non-issue) with less weight and perhaps better seperation and pinpointing. I've read that the SEF 10x12 gets better depth on smaller coins than the 12x15, and since the 12x15 is nearly as heavy as the 32 ounce WOT I'd probably want to avoid that coil anyway. That narrows it down to the S-12, Excelerator 12.5, Excelerator 14", or the SEF 10x12. All these coils are lighter than the 10" Tornado with the exception of the 14", but it's still lighter than the 12x15 or WOT. The 10x12 is either an ounce lighter or just a bit heavier than the 10". Can't remember, but it's close.
I've heard some guys prefer using the S12 as their everyday coil as it's several ounces lighter than the 10" Tornado (not to mention the old BBS coil that weighs right up there with the WOT and 12x15). Still, I haven't really read much in the way of people getting greater depth than the 10". The 12.5" Excelerator is about equal in weight and I'm curious if anybody thinks it goes deeper than the S-12, pinpoints or seperates targets better, and so on. I'm also curious if the 14" Excelerator gets even better depth on small coins or if it's beyond the size for that compared to the S-12 or 12.5Ex.
I could possibly see myself using the S-12 or 12.5 Ex. as my everyday coil as they are lighter than the 10", but I wonder how much seperation suffers. On the other hand, if the 14" is deeper (again, even on dimes and other smaller coins) then I could also see myself using that coil even if it was only for special occasions to hunt cleaner/deeper coin areas. Then there is the 10x12 SEF, which I would think wouldn't offer better depth than a round 10" coil but would offer more coverage just based on the dimensions of the coil. I could see it getting better seperation than a round, though.
Again, I realize it's the apples to oranges thing for FBS versus BBS machines, but lacking much in the way of comparisons on the net I'm forced to seek the opinions of FBS users. Do you think any of the above coils go as deep as the WOT, or are slow close in comparison that it's worth the weight savings by going to one of them? I'm not really a beach hunter. Mainly old coins, and have plenty of spots where the trash is near none or moderate at best where I'd like to run a larger coil to reach further depths.
