WHICH SOVEREIGN WAS THE BEST?

Hi everybody: If i were to look to buy a used Sovereign which one would you recommend and why? I read that some are disappionted with the new GT while others like it. The original, though it had the on/off iron mask switch, the coil was not waterproof. XS? XS2? 2aPRO? What do people think? Would like some advice. Thanks.
Denise

I like the original but I'm sort of biased as that's the Sovereign I use. Some old time Sovereign users still swear by this machine saying it's the best Sovereign ever made. Could be the reason you hardly ever see one up for sale.

I love my GT for damp and dry sand and would never sell it. I have an Excal for working in the suds. I love the ease with which I can go between the two and will say that using the GT with a 15 WOT coil I don't believe I leave much behind other than trash. I do have to drop back to a 10" or 8" coil if not working the beach or if there is to much trash as the WOT is just to hot IMO to work trashy areas.

They are all good. the last two, the elite and gt have the better batteries but they all hunt real close to each other. If youve never used one youd never know the difference.

The easiest to used is the XS or the XS2 with the 8 inch coinsearch coil, the XS2a has the extra switch for single tones which was a waste of space as it dont need that as the tones is what makes the Sovereign so special. The Elite to me didnt have the depth the earlier ones had, but a good battery system. The original some like I didnt like as the tones were not as nice i feel and didnt have the depth the XS had. The GT is the most powerful of all the Sovereign and so powerful it seems to false on iron more and recommend it to those that know the Sovereigns more than a newbie, the learning curve is easier on the older Sovereigns.
They are all great and will do well with any of them, but as you see some have a preference for certain models and mine is the GT followed by the XS or XS2, then the XS2a and the Elite and the original last.

The one I was using at the time was the absolute best of he best.
Why else would I have it?

Thankyou all for the info. Lots of opinions, thats why I asked. I do think that Rick is correct that the GT is not the machine for a newbie and I do not want to spend so much until I get to really know the Sovereign. Thanks for all the advice.

Blapppppp! wrong answer!

Why waste time with lesser machines.
Start with quality and learn to use it.
The GT is not really that different than any other Sovereign so go for it!

Buy the GT with a 10" coil and get out and find some good stuff.
There is no "easy way" or no "shortcut".
The experts that give you advice here did not learn it by reading on a forum.
They got out and spent many hours in the field learning the machine.
That is what you need to do regardless of which detector you buy.

I bought a used Sovereign XS after weighing cost and performance. One of the easiest ways to use an older Sovereign according to Jim Vokes is to Set the control box up as follows:

Two discriminate knobs set a Zero!!!!
Volume knob set at max volume!!
Sensitivity knob set at 12 o'clock
Threshold knob until you can just hear it..

Another interesting site is:

Some day I hope to buy a used Sovereign GT.

O.K. More food for thought......my head is still ringing from that dope slap....

Dave, I will check out those websites. Thanks

You have the right idea of starting with a XS,XS2 or the XS2a as it will be cheaper incase you dont like it you can resell it without losing a lot of money or even make a little. The older Sovereigns have less controls than the GT so it wont confuse you as much and easier to learn. The GT has more power i feel, but untill you know it well you mayl not see the difference and it will false more because of the power it has.
The ideal set up a newbie is a XS or XS2 or even the XS2a and add a 180 meter and the older 8 inch coinsearch coil as I felt it was easier to learn the Sovereign with this coil as the tones seem to sound better and with the good 180 meter you will be able to see the difference in the tones you may not be able to hear the difference in. Another nice option too for the Sovereigns is a Sun Ray S-1 probe to help find those very deep signals or those on a angle that will throw off the pinpointing signal. Ask anyone one of the long time Sovereign users and I am sure they will agree on my recommendation. If you want a set up like this just give me a PM as I think I know where some are.

This is a concise instruction video of the XS. It shows and explains the features if you are interested.

i have to ask this can anyone help me with my SOVEREIGN GT can you post pics of the settings that you like the best ? or help me out with my gt i am new minelab gt owner

Thank you all... I was able to pick up an xs2 with a couple of the good extras, a DTI 3 meter and the S-1 probe.
I really think that I am going to like this detector! Now I just need to spend the time to get to know it! Thanks everyone. The websites were very useful too!
