White 5000/D Series 2

I brought my White out of storage this past weekend and spent 6 or 8 hours in my yard. Found a load of junk, 5 Bullets and 2 buttons.

I bought this back in 1982/3. Am I working with a detector that is obsolete? It obviously still works, but I just don't have a feel for how much the new models have changed/improved.

Thanks.

i don't really think so.the most obvious difference is the weight.i've still got my old 5500 coinmaster and it still works great but after using the new models the weight is the most noticeable difference.unless you get up into the high end detectors they really haven't changed that much.it's basically the same technology just a neater package.

Is there nobody out there using this model that can relate their experience or love/hate of their metal detector?

Yes I still use my 5000D SERIES 2 it is NOT!!~! obsolete by any stretch of the imagination.LOVE IT COMPLETELY IT DOES NOT LIE TO ME I've owned this since 1981 and bought it new.Recently purchased another on E-bay because it is sooooo good. It is a little heavy but,you know it can take a lot of abuse and still out perform more expensive units. why is it sooo good, because it is basic and manual unit you can configure to ANY!!! type of detecting you need .anything else is a waste. nuf said

All right! I found another user. I like mine. It works for me, but I don't have anything to compare it to. So I am curious, which other models have you tried that didn't perform as well for you?

Other Units----NONE-- Why am I so up with Whites??. When you get lucky enough to find the right one the first time you buy a Detector you stick with it.I have 4 stories to post on here to let people know why I feel this way. Too late tonight to put up but will do tomorrow see ya

Here Goes # 1 About15 years ago I went to my favorite area to hunt for coins,in a large park in Manchester,N.H.I was using my 5000D series 2.While taking a break I saw 2 guys walking my way with detectors. They asked how I was doing and if I had found anything.I told them I had a few coins,3 Indian heads and an old trolley token. One of the guys came over and looked around to the side of me to see what kind of unit I was using ,when he saw what it was he said OH-NO!!To his buddy and said--WE MIGHT AS WELL LEAVE- HES GOT A WHITES AND WE WONT FIND ANYTHING HE GOT IT ALL! they both turned around and walked away. They were both packing new Garrett's.TRUE STORY

Is it Obsolete... depends on your definition of 'IS' is.

The 5000/D Series 1 discriminator operating at 6.59 kHz. The TR Discrimination Performance was lacking, even under average soil conditions. Performance on Nickels beyond 4" was problematic.

The Series II added White's 2nd Generation Motion Circuit, with Poor Recovery Times.

The All Metal Mode was very good. The Gain Controls were preset, so your ability to control the ground noise, in either mode was limited.

Makes a good rental for Property Markers.

You can gain some addl depth by using a method we referred to as Reverse Discrimination. But you hunt in the all

Note: Garrett Electronics will not fix or repair any detectors of this 1980s vintage calling their vintage detectors OBSOLETE and telling you to upgrade it to the newest technologies. Conversely, White's on the other hand will, regardless of the age, because they recognize that their customers like the oldies but goodies including the Classic Series.

In the Case of the 5000 Series II

I use a whites 5500d. Bought it about the same time era. I wouldnt take a million dollars for it. Always took good care of it and it takes care of me

Well, I have several Detectors, but my all time favorite was my 5500 D coin master, it was stolen out of my car several years ago, and I really miss it...I think mine was a series 2...I could read it, even tho alot of folks said that was not possible...I now have a Garrett 300 Ace, and a Higher end Bounty Hunter (Not real good)...But I keep hoping to come across a real deal on an old Whites....I would like to try a newer model like the 6000 D Pro...Anyway that is my 2 cents....I am a weekend warrior type detector user, and don't really need a really high dollar unit, but don't want to use a toy, so if you are not a real serious detector user, it should give you many hours of pleasure.......Tom Shaw

Got a 6000 DI that I traded for my 5000D still used both as backup machines or for trying to initiate newbies. OBSOLETE!?! Sounds like salesmanese to me!

YES I THINK YOU COULD HAVE SOMETHING THERE.WELL,ANYWAY I don't know about anyone else but I don't need a unit that tells me whether its a penny or a double eagle face up or down. To me it takes some of the adventure out of it.So obsolete means nothing, its a frame of mind!!

Hello,

I used a coinmaster v back in the 1970's to 1980's in Ohio,Kentucky,Indiana and others in competition hunts!
I never lost a competion, and was so good even as a youth,Ken White would approach me.
I was good enough to win the adult competitions! Trust me!
I have more up to date detectors today as well as my original models, but I can tell you cost and weight is really the biggest differences.

The newer detectors however are more forgiving as far as sweeping patterns!
Anywhere close to the coil, they will detect a target!
I still love the sound of the oldies!
