Depends on a few things and I'll try to explain from my perspective. I have found some great items that were worth a lot of cash but according to what you want to major in and the particular college you want to attend....the dollar amount varying greatly of course, I doubt if what I have found would fund a college fund. Your talking about $3000-$30,000 and up!!!
I have a
great interest in treasure caches and story's of stagecoach hold-ups, hidden loot. Jesse James lost stashes, Civil War strong box's that were sent to pay the troops and fund the war efforts. They commonly contained gold coins and were stolen and hid up in different locations. Bank robbers that were shot soon after they stole the contents of the banks/safes etc; and the location of the loot and the list goes on.
Many treasure stories have been highly embellished and I don't think I am a 'dreamer' but there is verified truthful documentation that proves some of these story's have some truth to them i.e. Victorio Peak in New Mexico.
One of my dreams is to metal detect the desert surrounding the peak in search of the gold bars that Noss or his partner said he buried them "just in case their partnership dissolved". Too bad it was annexed to White Sands Missile base and is off limits!!! Who would have thought there would have been gold bars underneath a really remote mountain to the tune of.......some have estimated BILLIONS of dollars? That 'treasure story could have been written off as another fanciful 'story' with no truth to it BUT....the only problem is it has been absolutely proven as truth!!. If you have not read about Victorio Peak and the treasure it did or still does contain, read it and you'll see where I'm coming from.
My point is that if there are like minded people like me and I know there are many, that may have found some of this stuff, you will never hear about it because of tax avoidance and other reasons i.e. they would be on the top of the list for being robbed for starters and also, the land which the items were found would almost certainly be private land and if they did not get permission, almost certainly would have been trespassing.
Metal detecting will only fund a college tuition (depending on the dollar amount) if:
1. You are super serious about this 'hobby' and you have the determination to do what it takes to get the $. Of course it ceases to be a hobby and it will then be a job/profession!
2. You have the money to invest in the above quest. It will take a lot of money up front.
3. You have the time to do it. If you are retired, you probably don't have the health anymore to do the above.
Good luck and happy (treasure) hunting!! Oh, by the way, don't quit your day job!
