WHITES NEW DETECTOR

In the words of a politician, "You Betcha!"

First, I don't know why 8kHz was chosen for the Prizm series. Can't do anything about that now. But I can do something about coils. Tonight I built up a 4x6 shooter coil for Prizm and it works pretty good. I'll get the factory to make a few more, test them to make sure they're right, then put them into production. I'm also working on an all-new slim 6" spider coil. This will be initially for Prizm, but I expect I will move it to DFX as well.

Second, yes, White's is paying a lot more attention to end-users' suggestions. I recently started a new "Talk To White's" forum on the White's forum group, where folks can talk directly to engineering and give us feedback and ideas (as well as criticism!). But I'll also try to keep up with as many other forums as I can.

Carl, why are all the manufacturers going with the spider coil design? Also why the 4x6 shooter for the Prizm? That particular 4x6 shooter design hasn't done well with the lower freq. detectors like the XLT. More people prefer the Bullseye coil as it has better depth than the shooter. Just curious. Thanks!

I would like to evaluate the performance of the M6 and new T6 against the XL Pro and IDX Pro at one of the ghost town sites I have lined up for you to hunt. It's nasty with iron as the whole town was burned down. Who knows, I might end up eating crow and buy a new detector.

Because they tend to be more stable, and people like them.

I jumped on the Shooter because it's a quick adaptation of the DFX version. Yes, the 5.3 is a little deeper because it is bigger. Keep in mind that the depth of an elliptical is determined by its short dimension, so a 4x6 coil is closer to a 4" round coil. I'm also working on a 6" concentric (a true 6") as a mid-size coil, but it uses all-new windings so there is some tooling to do.

One thing I don't like about spider coils is that they hang up on the grass while pinpointing. Make the bottom of the coils smooth and rounded. Not square and sharp.

I like to slide my coil right on the ground when pinpointing. The spiders catch the grass. Some spider coils are smooth on the bottom some are flat and sharp. So maybe the new Prizm coils are smooth and rounded?

has been long overdue.

As for the 4X6 'shooter' design, the Eclipse version for the M6 & MXT worked quite well, but the BlueMax version for the XLT, XL Pro and Classics stunk. That's the best short-word description that comes to mind. I matched or bettered the 4X6 BlueMax using the 4" Snooper (BlueMax 350), and sure wished it would have performed better.

I hope you can get good performance out of the 4X6 DD on a Prizm (especially the 6T) as it would add that Double-D dimension to what's coming. I am also pleased to hear the move to a 6" concentric of 'spider' coil design. If it's contoured like the new 10" D[sub]2[/sub] coil and not sharp-edged and flat bottomed (as khouse described) then I know it will do well. I have long favored the 6

Hi Monte,

I hand-tuned the shooter and could only take 6T sensitivity up to the 3rd level before it overloaded, and it seemed to perform just fine. I'll get production to accurately tune a few today.

Didn't realize you stopped by... please give a yell next time, I'd like to meet you!

A New wish list no 1/ prizm 6T/ I would like a coil selection as well BUT!! In cking on this unit I was told not to expect more coils only the 8" that was on the II/III/IV units /nothing new other than the 6 T.. Yep still want one with the features!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gottit
Many dealers and others are either not-in-the-know, or they don't keep up on the forums. Plus, some might have heard something but were asked to keep it under their hat. Once the word comes from the factory, however, then I figure it is fair game to discuss.

Carl has commented in a few places that they are working on a thin, 6" spider coil for the Prizm series. I think the Prizm 6T with the stock spider 9" and an optional 6" will make a great 2-coil package and, with what it has to offer in easy-to-adjust functions, I bet it becomes one of the most popular mid-priced detectors.

No, it's not perfect and there's one modification I'll make to mine after I get it, but it has moved into my #1 item to acquire, and the 6" coil is #2 ... as soon as it's released.

 My 2 Cents........I think the answer to this problem is simple. Whites should stop relying on the dealer's opinions exclusively and should start reading these forums.
rdf ... I agree, and since Carl's been around White's we've seen more information flowing and more good answers, and he's using both his eyes and ears (to "hear" what we are saying). I think this is a positive sign.

Sadly, it is true that all too often a manufacturer polls the dealers and not the end consumers. I think those days are going to be changing.

A company building detectors for over 50 years that doesn't know that smaller than stock coils are great? Why don't Mr.White give all the engineers machines and give you all 2 weeks (paid leave of course) to use them. Not passing the coil over paint sticks with a pull tab glued on it! I believe engineers need to use what they build. Put in 80 hours on a detector. First hit a 100 year old home that's infested with tons of roofing nails and iron pieces from all the remodels and equipment. Stick that big coil on and see what you find? Then stick on a hockey puck and try again. See for yourself if the controls are easy to reach and understand. Take your machines into the woods where twigs and stobs grab your coils and won't let go. How about those headphone cables getting tangled up on a branch and pull your ears and glasses off. (build in some wireless guys!) Can you swing a 4 plus pound detector for 6 hours? Isn't 2 pounds better? Hey it's not just metal detectors. It's not just one brand either. Every time I mow my grass on my commercial zero turn mower I think the same thing. If the engineers would put their butt in the seat and try to reach the ignition switch they would have moved it. What about the tank switching valve. I have to stand on my head because it's up under the front of the seat to switch tanks. I can't even find the spark plugs on my car any more! It's all covered up with plastic crap! Oh yes if an engineer had to use or work on their equipment?

I'm not implying all engineers are bad. Heck, I would be one if I was smart enough!

 Dittos to you khouse! I couldn't have said it better myself. You are right. It's not just metal detectors,...it's everything. It seems like technology is increasing and good old common sense is decreasing. I feel just like Monte does about the Classic series. It was the best and the "Prisms" don't even come close. The metal detector users themselves know what works best for them. I am very disappointed in ALL the detector companies right now. I hate to complain all the time, :nopity: but it's just not like it used to be in the industry. Today's metal detectors have goofy names, bright colors (like children's toys, are way overpriced, and are geared to the youth. I guarantee you that most detectorists are 40+ years old. I personally won't use a bright yellow metal detector period! I know I'm oldschool. Just can't help it. So I will probably just hold on to my old IDX Pro. Thanks for listening and HH from RDF :whites::detecting:
