7cents is interested in it...what is this hobby about and what does a person need to get started. I know of no one in our area that does this....What features should one look for in a GPS unit?

I have geocached with the kids in the past. Pretty fun! There is a geocaching site out there where you plug in your zip code and they show you all the ones in your area. They also let you know how hard they are and if they are part of a multiple cache. You can buy the cheapest handheld gps you can find. Just make sure you are able to plug in coordinates. I have even used a car gps in a pinch. My kids really enjoyed it. That is until they got a little older. Have fun!

ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am totally addicted!!!!!!!!!!!!! I enjoy all types of treasure hunting but this is my favorite!!!!!! I've been caching for a little over a year now and love, Love, LOVE it!!!!!!!!

I use to do quiet a bit of it. I could never get my hubby interested in metal detecting but he did get interested in geocaching. Geocaching.com and groundspeak are both good sites. There will be a forum on GPS's there. I used a handheld Garmin nuvi and it worked great. You definitely don't have to put a lot of money into a gps to geocach. Of course like everything else, people who really get serious about it want the best. The thing I loved the most about it was that many people try and pick very interesting places to put the caches; therefore, you get to experience lots of new and interesting things and places. I guess the worst experience we ever had was this couple let their little grandson type in the coodinates into the website for their hidden cache. Well we followed the gps and ended up on top of a strip job in waiste high grass that they sow to hold the strip job. Well we looked down and both were covered from head to toe with ticks. We started picking them off each othere then realized it was useless. We hiked back to the car andI literally stripped down to my panties and bra in the middle of the road. LOL the ticks were everywhere. We had to pick our clothes, turn the inside out and pick the other side and needless to say we still too several home with us. The cache (we found out later ) was on the other side of the road just a few feet from the car. We were NOT the only ones who posted about getting all the ticks. Other people had gone up there too.

WE had lots of good experiences and found places in our local area that we would have never found otherwise. That's the biggest treasure you find in geocaching.

We have one at church but nobodys knows how to play it! :yikes:Lol!

Been doing it since it began. Have Travis give me a call. You girls will love it too.

Hi Theresa, are you sure it was an error by the grandson or a big joke pulled on you and other people? There are those kind of people in the world ya know! I've never tried it and probably won't with my health the way it is but would if I had a friend to go with, for it sounds like it would be fun and I would be able to get out to different places like when MD'ing! Ma Betty

Well, Ma maybe be need to pray for God to send you a neighbor!?! :surprised: A handsome, gentlemanly neighbor preferably!!!! Lol...I'm just funnin' with ya!

That is okay Liz, but my neighbor is a confrimed bachalor and isn't interested in me, as he is only in his early 60's and too busy with his men friends for anything but mowing my lawn! Don't want someone real close to me, as they might turn out to be a couch potato and a pest by visiting or wanting to get out too often! ;) :heh:  Ma Betty

I must confess! I did it! A few years ago and long before I ever heard the term "Geocashe", I was out metal detecting a county park area and, in the process of detecting near the woods, I found a zip-lock back stuffed in between two upright large stumps of a tree. I had no idea what it was and assumed some child had placed it there when the family was enjoying the pic-nick grounds of the area. So I took the pouch out of the crevice of the tree and opened it up. There were all sorts of odds and ends, in the bag, and some of the items were interesting so I kept the bag. Little did I know it was a 'Geocashe'. When I found out, I felt bad that I had destroyed someones planting. By that time of course I had disposed of the bag and it contents. From then on, I have been much more careful to leave such items in their place and go about my business of metal detecting.
