Who IS the coil man?

Hi All,

I'd like to have a sniper coil for my MD.

Possibly an attainable goal for diy fabrication.

I built a number of antenna arrays years ago when involved in ham radio, with the help of some very nice fellows.

Seems to me there are similarities here, on a smaller scale.

What is the rf output of these MDs?

Are their output transistors extremely sensitive?

Would any mismatch throw a monkeywrench into the whole process of phase detection and interpretation?

It could be better to employ something already fabricated than crudely wrapping a coil at home.

Is it possible to adapt a $27 4" sniper coil by BH to a 10khz tesoro as opposed to spending $100?

Nowhere can I find mention of the BH operating frequencies! where is that info?

If reaonably close, it should be possible to trim the balance of the circuit, shouldn't it?

Or would Q be inordinately affected?

What is required? an swr meter? an oscilloscope?

I donated my accumulated test gear to a club years ago, for distribution to new aspiring hams, but it might be possible for me to enlist someone for help after a little searching. It seems ham radio has taken a big fade in recent years...

Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

There are not many DIY'ers here on these forums but there is a forum that goes into that, I don't think I can link it here. There may be another choice for you, maybe finding a used Tesoro coil, list a WTB on the classifieds. As far as using a different brand coil and modding it, I guess it could be done if you are very good with electronics.

I wanted to say Thanks, Brian...

Those are some smart pirates over there at the geo*** forum!
Real entertaining to read through the threads.

Long time ago I graduated from an electronics tech school, and I was also a ham operator for a while...

Those guys are sharp! Innovative, and creative.

R M P T R if it's any help the BH 4" coil is packaged with the Fisher F4, which runs at 6.8 kHz. The F2/F4 can use several of the BH coils, like the Magnum 10" too, and the 11" DD coil from the F4 will also work on the F2 and most of the current BH lineup.

hi i have taken a coil apart and i to was a ham radio guy a few years ago, what i found inside besides the coil is a small resistor and cap. set up. i belive they call that a lc , it must match the inpedenace to the detector thats my 2 cents on it wnat you need to do is read out the resistenace on the coil lead and see if you can find what is the tx and the rec leads, i have a bh and it is the same as the fisher f2/f4 ,the coils will work fine on them i, am useing a 11"dd on a bh now works ok dennis in ny
