whwt ever happened to Garretts`Infinium`??

People tried it.
No, thats a bit cruel but I think it should have gone on the market with the smaller coil they later produced and some method of switching the discrimination system on and off.

I have a Infinium,it is over rated, its heavy.it could use a sensitivy control knob. They are working on filter to lesen ground noise.
It has ground balance,at 15us the 10"x15"DD COIL will detect a .9 gram nugget at coil. The 5"X10"DD coil will detect a.8 gram gold nugget in ground 5". garrett just came out with a mono coil 8" and a large coil. Some of the Infinium need to modified for mono coils.I sent mine in to be modified free of charge,it under Warranty.

Hi, two days ago I was detecting the beach with my Whites PI 3000 , when I met a guy with a Garret Infinium. Knowing very well that mi PI is an old design, I asked infos on the new Infinium. The guy told me he got it in september 2003 and since then he found many coins , some silver but no gold at all.
We where detecting on a very black sand beach in Rome, Italy, and he was complaining about ground interference from black sand. I also tried to follow his trail and I recovered some cents behind him.
I know this is not proof (no gold and overlooked cents) that the infinium is a toy but all the rumors around suggest it.
Cheers

Luca,
The Infinium is NO toy.that old white 3000 is the toy.Black sand wont bother it.You friend in Rome has theshold set to high. All he needs to do is go to fast or slow setting, to set ground balance.may-be lower threshold.Infinium has to much power, not emough controls on.As for your friend not finding gold,he has to pass the coil over it to detect gold.On a man's gold ring you can expect the infinium to detect it from 12" to 18" in beach sand.I could go on, No need.
Frank.

Hello,
maybe you can give more datail on the Infinum such as TX transistor/fet used, Ampere injected in the coil, RX first stage amplifier used etc. It would be interesting also to know TX pulse length,RX sample timing and duration or , best of all, have a circuit schematic . <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Hi,
I have a Garrett Infinium and a Minelab GP 3000 I use for nugget detecting. In general the GP has better overall depth on larger gold and better sensitivity to the smallest nuggets. As well it should at three times the price of an Infinium (in the US).
But I do like my Infinium and have done very well with it on nuggets, jewelry, and coins. For a PI unit it is more versatile than most. The 14"x10" DD coil is stock, 10"x5" DD is available now as is an 8" mono coil. The 14"x10" mono is due soon (finally!) and the 7"x3" DD later this year.
Part of the problem is Garrett over-hypes the unit, and so people are disappointed it does not live up to the hype. But I'm keeping mine as it's paid for itself several times over.
I do think I'll spring for GoldQuest next as I'm growing fond of PI detecting. Why have only two!
