Why Doesn't Whites (and others) Incorporate a USB Connection for Easy Upgrades??

Some detector manufacturer's have Incorporated USB ports to easily upgrade a detector. Even some sort of port for memory card/stick would be great. I don't think it would be to hard or expensive. One of my other hobbies is amateur radio. Whites could benefit immensely by studying the business model of a USA radio manufacturer by the name of Elecraft. Most of there radio equipment is easily upgraded by means of USB connection. Elecrafts owners maintain an open forum for problems, suggested improvements and otherwise open discussion with the owners (who are engineers). Updates to the software are released on a fairly steady basis. They NEVER CHARGE for this service! There are similarities between these 2 product lines (metal detectors and radio equipment). If your curious have a look at a new super small transceiver the KX2..whats inside the case is an example of what can be done today with the electronic components and manufacturing techniques.

Your forgetting someone has to maintain the system........ someone has to make variable adjustments, for different country systems,..and your forgetting the varied service systems( Internet providers) and their speeds etc for proper downloads..

Some systems work well, some not so well. Uniden radios have the downloads, and sometimes there are a ton of improper downloads that are very hard to reverse once loaded.

You also have to take into account peoples abilities for understanding downloaded data techniques. ..

Extra tooling cost, manufacturing, developing software for the public.

The way they did it probably allowed a better end price too.

If they can get the bugs worked out it looks like a really nice machine and if I was a fresh water hunter would like to own one

Patent laws, to my knowledge.

I never got the details but it does seem to have to do with legalites. You'd think that the facts of the matter would be out in the open after all these years. Shame that the technology has to be dumbed-down. I can't think of one detecting company using USB portability. Who holds the legal rights rights? Deus does give live firmware updates though.

These metal detectors aren't really much more than toys for big boys anyway. I've seen medicines and Iphones get more flexible is shorter order. Sad, and all within a hobby, just a hobby. I don't really believe that it's tooling cost unless the manufacturers are skiddish about the overall future of the hobby.

Did a quick Google, USB metal detecting. Seems that Minelab might be key. Most V3i users would love to be able to share progs and get firmware updates without paying shipping plus the lost detecting time. I'd just like to have my programs archived in the event of the machine having to be factory reset.

Be careful what you wish for. The 3030 has an USB port and have read on a different forums some issues with it.

Metal detector with data transfer
Patent number: 7310586
Abstract: A metal detector adapted to generate a transmit search signal and to receive a receive search signal, and to analyse such received search signal, wherein the detector is adapted to allow a selection of operating parameters for each of these functions, said selection being effected by the storage as data in a memory of such selection, characterised in that the detector is adapted to allow such stored data to be modified in accordance with data in an external store, further characterised in that there is a digital data communication transmission program, adapted to effect a transmission of some or all of the stored data through a data transmission means to enable a further metal detector to receive and store for use in such further detector the said data.
Type: Grant
Filed: August 25, 2004
Date of Patent: December 18, 2007
Assignee: Minelab Electronics Pty Ltd
Inventors: Laurentiu Stamatescu, Alexander Lewis Jones
