Why don't we make a free pi design on this forum?

G'day All, I have had a quick read through this whole PI Page and find it very interesting, Being new to the Metal Detecting game and in the "land Down Under" (Australia) we don't have much in the way of metal detectors(MD) But I do beleive that a good farady sheild can be made by using either Alluminium or lead tape this is a commonly available in the Auto Shops and over here goes by the common name of "100 Mile an Hour tape" or AirFrame tape this stuff is very sticky and will even stick to WET objects.
Anyway hope this helps and I look forward to seeing this "Borg" detector (star trek joke!!) ;0)

Hi Salty,
Welcome to the PI Forum. Aluminium tape is no good for shielding a coil as you get too much signal from the tape itself. Lead tape only works because it is a much less conductive metal. Has to be very thin too, 0.1mm, otherwise you will run into the same problem. Lead is also good because you can, with care, solder the ground lead to it.
Eric.
