Why is my depth gauge consistently wrong?

The gauge reading moves up and down a little bit, but a coin on the surface still measures 6 inches, actually everything measures about 6 inches.
I have it set factory quickstarty, except I brought the sensitivity up to 22, and the threshold down to a low hum.

you are not in pinpoint mode are you, it won't measure depth.

Thanks for the reply..
No...I only consider the depth reading before I get to pinpoint, or what I do is after I pinpoint and turn pinpoint off I will wiggle the coil around the target spot to try and get a good reading. The indicator moves slightly, but, unless the target is buried at about 6 inches, it won't be correct,
The coil is lightly touching the ground, usually at all times.

The original Explorer is known for not having a reliable depth meter. I notice mine is off in less mineralized soil... go figure... <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> The Explorer II supposed fixed that problem. But, I don't have one so I couldn't tell you for sure.

My Ex II, will on depth jump from top to bottom with coins on surface. When it does this I always check for coin on surface hidden by the grass.
