WHY THE PRO-POINTER DETECTS DEEPER IF YOU HOLD METAL AGAINST THE HOUSING...

Uncle Willy

Since the PP is a static detector and affected by stationary metal and does not tune it out as would a motion detector - by introducing another piece of metal ( your ring, a coin, piece of foil ) you've driven the detection signal that much closer to the detection threshold. Therefore it takes less target metal to push the signal over the detection threshold.

We know the PP will detect a larger object deeper so by placing a piece of metal on the housing it is just the basic accumulation of metal that drives the signal closer to the detection threshold. All this compliments of a Garrett engineer.

Now we know. I use that method all the time on deep coins. Found a mess of silver and wheats with a nickel held to the side of my Pro-Pointer.

Does'nt mention any of this. At least it didn't when I field tested it nor is it in my manual. I knew it worked I just had to know why. Makes sense now.

Bill.

AARGH!! We in Australia already figured that out for ourselves when the PP fist came out here. NAA, NAA, NA NA NAA, WE BEAT TH YAANKS AARGH!!

Even if another certain Aussie is currently poking out his tougue and wagging his hehind in your direction. Very naughty, I mean cheeky Adrian.:nono::lol:

Funny you say that because before i got into metal detecting there was guy that i worked with that did alot of metal detecting and one day he was going and some of the other guys in the shop went to his truck and taped a metal washer to the coil of his detector as a joke thinking that it would make the detector sound off all the time. The next day the guy was happy and said that he had found more stuff than any other day. The guy that put the washer on the coil owned up to what he did was susposed to be a joke but turns out the joke was own him. The washer was still taped to the coil and to this day we can not firgure out why the metal detector worked better with the metal washer taped to the coil.

that relay is a good bit of info as I use my pro pointer before I dig especially if I think it might be a good target so I don't have to dig a Creator, and I am always a bit scared of marking a good coin

I put on a demonstration at one of our club meetings 6 months ago regarding this point. I compaired several different pin pointers and they all reacted in the same manner. Now I'm going to try it on some of my older detectors.

We've known about it for awhile just not how and why. With your vast store of knowledge you should apply for a job with Garrett as an engineer. :)

AARGH!! Me thinks Mr C Garrett is a bit more switched on bout tectors than lil ole me

This Bit of extra metal on the coil technique will work with most detectors that are silent search that have the threshold held below the zero voltage line and do not have continuous Auto tune.

G/Day Mick,

I think it is good to break the seriousness every now and again and what better way than to have a Dig at the Yanks. They be all great blokes on this forum and I'm sure they don't mind a bit of a gag now and again. AARRGH!!
