Winter Battery treatment

Mike in MN

New member
I'm a new Minelab user (Explorer SE) and up here in the north country, we're about done with detecting for 4-5 months. What is the best way to store the rechargable battery over this period of time? Just leave it alone? Charge it perodically, or what?
Thanks!

I have read several articles on rechargeables and you could leave them alone or recharge them about once a month. They will not be harmed by storage, however from what I recall most do suggest that you change it once a month. I know that seems like a contradiction so you decide.

I think that all suggest taking it out of the MD or device if they are going to sit unused for a period of time.

I usually just leave my batteries drained until Spring arrives. I haven't had any kind of performance problems doing this so it seems to be ok to do. Interesting to see another detectorist up close to my neck of the woods on the Forum. Good Luck and HH.

Mike,
I am somewhat of an expert on batteries. Rule of thumb. Nickel Metal Hydride Cells (Nimh) should be charged and stored. They should be topped off for storage periods greater than 6 months. NICADS (Nicd) should be discharged to .3 - .6 Volts per cell for storage.
