I was finally able to find a set of Auvio 33-283(discontinued by radioshack) on ebay for a decent price.

The transmitter is rechargeable(have to remember to plug it into the charger when I get back home) and the headphones use AAA's. The headphones are LOUD, but have a volume control.

I've been using them for two weeks now. It's GREAT to not have a wire getting hung up on my finds pouch or my digger. I highly recommend a pair....IF you can find them.

I've got three of them. They are the best wireless add-on that I've found.

Bluetooth has a

Sounds fantastic!

I really would like to come over a pair of those headphones. Where can I find them?

Michael..

Its a good thing reading the whole post:)
See that you purchase via Ebay. Will look that up.

Michael

They're great. You can also use AAA rechargeables and flip the switch inside the headphone battery compartment and they'll charge when you're charging the dongle. My only problem is the jack converter to go from one eighth to one quarter doesn't fit that tight, and I have to tape it.

Didn't the 33-283 just come out a while back? Seems like maybe 2 years ago. I have 2 new sets of their previous wireless and they work great also. Guess I'll have to look around for the 33-283. Seems like they were around $80-90$ new.

Auvio 33-283 wireless

"I recently put together wireless headphones for metal detectors using these Radio Shack parts:
> AUVIO Portable Digital Wireless Stereo Headphones Part # 33-283
> Adapter Plug 1/4 Stereo Male to 1/8 Stereo Female Part # 274-876
> Volume Control Headphone Extension Cord Part # 42-2559

You can plug the transmitter directly into the Adapter Plug but it seemed too exposed to damage hanging out the back of the detector. For that reason, I bought the Extension Cord so I could secure the transmitter, with velcro, to the top of the control box. BTW, since the headphones have a volume control, the volume control in the Extension Cord is not necessary but I could not find a standard short extension cord.

Have not spent a lot of time with these wireless headphones but so far they are working great with no detectable delays. I set the inline volume control to full volume and am controlling the volume with the adjuster on the headphones. CAUTION ... at full volume on both the inline and headphone adjusters the signals are VERY loud.

This setup was tested and works well on all the Whites detectors I own. I have read that not all manufacturers wire their headphone jacks the same way. Since I am not an electronic tech, I do not know what other makes and models this setup will work on."

"I have a pair of the 283 model and I think they are great and will stand up to any of the high dollar brands...I also did the exact same thing with the transmitter moving it from being damaged. I have mine set up on my E Trac detector. I got mine the other day at the clearance price of 49.97. I got lucky. In the meantime I also use them to listen to music from my computer...GREAT STEREO SOUND..."

Thanks for posting that David! I haven't built/purchased a cord yet.

I've been noticing something odd when I use these headphones. I sometimes get a scratchy/poor contact sound. I thought that it was probably a connection issue at the transmitter and the adaptor....but it only does it occasionally...and get this...only over JUNK targets. I never had this happen with my wired headphones sets. Anyone else notice this?????

I was typing this and did not see your post above, so now on an edit, you are welcome.!

These ones might have replaced the discontined 33-283 model.?:

RadioShack AUVIO stereo wireless headphones, catalog # and model #: 33-281 $69.99

Also a wireless headphone made for metal detectors is called Airheadz.:

The transmitter on the 33-281's is that big stand thing. Too big and not battery powered.

The 33-284's are the same thing as the 283's, but earbuds. I can't use earbuds...they hurt and don't stay in my ears.

BEWARE If you buy these headphones on ebay, make SURE everything is there. I just picked up another cheap set, but there is no transmitter.

My Advice to you all is check your local Radio Shack I read this post at four o'clock and ran over to my shack it is only two blocks from my house and what do you know they had four sets on the shelf and the best news was that they were being discounted close out the PRICE 29.95 now you can't beat that can you. I have my new set on the charger and just waiting to try them out tomorrow.

Hi all, WeedWacker got me so 'wacked' :wacko:that I might miss out on the wireless set....especially noting that his post was 10/06...I hustled to our one Radio Shack today on lunch break and found the last set of wireless with headphones hanging on the wall....$29.95:clapping:! Haven't charged them up yet....but at least I have them. Says right on the box...no delay! Have yet to look at my electronic plug-ins to see if I have the goods to pig tail the sender to below the screen on the detector (705) Am supposed to be working, not playing with my addiction!!! The Radio Shack fella said that they can contact other R.S.'s to see who still has the 33-283 in stock. As to placement, that can be figured out any time. It's getting the wireless at that price. Thanks, WeedWacker, for getting me going! At that price, I can afford to play with them to see how they work for me! Jan

Bought a set of the Auvio 33-284 earbud wireless and I really like them. Ear buds have a volume control. You will need to buy a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter also but then it plugs right in the headset jack. On sale for $55.97 Comes with a USB Y adapter so you can charge the ear buds and transmitter at the same time. The whole transmitter unit only sticks out 1 1/2". I haven't noticed any signal delay. Can even wear a stocking cap for the cold weather hunting!!
I would recommend them.

Glad you found a set Jan I know you will love them I have hunted with mine now on several hunts and they work just great, Happy hunting

I could not let this go !!

I popped over to my local RS and on the bottom shelf they had 3 left, so I purchased 2 of them. One has been charged up ready to go, can't wait for the weekend to come round to get out and test them. The long days (10 hours) at work are a killer at the moment :(

I'll give some feedback as soon as I've had a play in the field.

I wrecked my transmitter. Not quite sure how it happened. But, while traveling from one site to another, the second "band" got extremely worn. I no longer have good contact. Perhaps I had the weight of the detector on the transmitter as I traveled.(and I was on many miles of gravel road.) I set my detector on the passenger side of the pickup.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to fix it or not, so I have another set ordered.

Anyway....REMOVE YOUR TRANSMITTER when travelling from site to site.
