With the newer machines in mind..

how much of a difference is there between running the stock coil at low sensitivity vs one of the smaller coils in older sites that have the typical large amount of old iron present? I'm looking for decent depth yet still maintain as much seperation as possible.
I guess I really don't have a good enough understanding of how much the size/shape and strength of the transmit fields affect the amount of signals to the receive circuit especially on the newer machines.
I don't buy the "cone shape" detection pattern that most claim for the round concentric coils, but I do realize that high gain settings pick up way to many targets off to the side of the coil for effective hunting in trash.
Should I just continue to hunt the same sites with different coils at different gain settings as I have been doing?
Thanks in advance for any insight on the subject.
Tom
