Howdy all,
Some of you may have read last summer , my posts concerning me being a little freaked out about detecting in Bear country, and we have Mtn lions too.

Well, The local Elk herd (200 head) that hangs out around here in the winter , just moved down to their wintering grounds, about 1 1/2 miles down the road to be exact.
And , I guess this year a pack of wolves followed them here.
Fish and game says theres 5. and that they hang around the timber line till dark, they are saying we need to keep our critters locked up at night, along with alot of other guidelines.
They did say , we are in an "Experimental area" and that we CAN kill wolves that are in the chase , of our livestock or pets.
They are also asking all local residents TO HARASS the wolves , to put a fear in them.
the newspaper said these wolves have been reported walking down the road , in front of houses.
Its amazing how big they are, theyre tracks are bigger than my hand,,,, Thats a BIG DOG!

I think I'm going to be become a TOT LOT hunter!

LOL

In the spring, summer and fall, I hike 2 miles every morning up to my gold claim. I share the area with a black bear, a brown bear boor, a brown bear sow with a new cub and 2 brown bear cubs that were kicked out by mom last year, the mom brown bear sow that kicked out the 2 cubs, Moose, Lynx, wolf pack that has 11 members, and a variety of smaller animals. They are curious as to what I am doing, but they leave me alone. One morning as I was walking up to my claim, I woke up a black bear that was sleeping about 20 feet from the trail. The bear wasn't quite fully awake and ran down the hill onto the trail 20 feet in front of me. It stopped, looked at me with a look on it's face that suggested "I can't believe I just did that." It turned and ran down the trail away from me, hind legs losing their footing and out of sync with the front legs. The bear looked clumsy and reminded me of a bear running in a cartoon. It again stopped about 100 feet in front of me, turned, looked at me shaking it's head again with the look of "I can't believe I just did that." By this time I had the bear in the sights of my .45-70 rifle, saying to the bear out loud, "Just turn and run away because I don't want to shoot you and you don't want to be dead." As if on cue, the bear turned away from me, ran off the trail and straight up the side of the mountain in a different direction than I was heading. The whole encounter took less than a few seconds. I will always treasure and remember that morning as being special. It was a unique and great experience.

Since the re-introduction of wolves in idaho, our Elk herds have been in serious decline and rancher's livestock have been victimized as well. All for the sake of satisfying a few do-gooder enviromentalists. In spite of the fact that wolf numbers exceed the original target, hunting or other control is not allowed. Whenever I detect in areas near or in the woods or mountains, I now carry a weapon.

I think I would be hunting in the tot lots too Dusty. No question about it. [attachment 184349 Capture.JPG] Be careful out there! Nancy

Its too bad that in just a few years the wolves have killed enough elk that even if the wolves were moved now, it would take 30 years before the elk numbers where back up. We don't have them yet but they are 250 miles to the north & that is nothing but a hop skip & a jump before they show up. We will then have to put up with them as well as the black tailed prarie dog, which if you have one on your property it becomes useless. Not the dog the land.

We have them in Oregon and the cry babies love the fact that the ranchers are losing there cows to them. We seem to be in a cycle that welcomes the mentally handicapped to get into politics. The screams we hear for more gun control because some political was shot is nothing more than a rights grab. Taxes and rights, the name of the liberal game. Steal both and this country will be on it's back. So far, we see these people come on as well educated types. Funny though, how come with so much education they can't or won't learn to read the Constitution?

I am so with you on this Starvin. You hit it on the head. John
