When I hunt around old old houses I keep the detetore in coin and jewlery. I don't really
want to be digging old iron and junk, but some people like the relic mode.

I do a lotta woods hunting, and I use all metal and max sens usually, cause you just don't know where a hunter mighta lost his wedding ring or pocket watch, some woods got trash, some don't, I live in a woods, it don't got no trash hardly, found some neat stuff, some woods got old tools, from farmers woodcutting, or where old fences were, WIRE, just gotta digit to see what's there, got a nice lightning rod brass ball, don't have no idea how it got in native woods, but will make a beauty of a cane knob, if it beeps DIGIT:garrett:

I often hunt in the woods and find it very relaxing because you are mostly undisturbed. The finds can vary from recent to very old. @ years ago I found a very beautiful Roman coin on 3" deep on a hiking path. I never expected that. But in general it's fun to detect in the woods.

Too bad you didn't find an old lightning rod. In the 1800's and before they were made of platinum as platinum back then was a worthless metal. Keep that in mind when you are around very old homes.

One place we always look for is areas where people set up hunting camps. Always good for coins and sometimes jewelry. Expect lots of bottle caps and pull tabs though.

That's kind of weird.. I know some lightning rods have used platinum for the tips, but hadn't
heard much about the whole rod being made from platinum. Makes me wonder where in the
heck they got it... Not the most plentiful metal around in those days.
Lightning rod glass balls can be a good find if you can find them not broken.
In the old days many makers would install the glass balls both for ornamental reasons,
but also as a strike indicator. IE: if after a storm the ball was broken, they knew to do
a careful check of the rod and wires to ground for any damage.
Some have used platinum for tips in the 1800's, as they thought it would stand up
to strikes better. But not used too much these days. In reality, copper is just as good
and is the usual metal used for rods, and down conductors. I like checking out the rods
on tall skyscrapers. They will have many of them all around the edge of the roof.
I noticed the same at most hospitals.

In my personal woods, the #1 find is slugs.. Whoever owned the land before me was
a shooting fool.. He must have shot nearly constantly.. And all big stuff like .45 colt, etc..
I find them all over the place. Even out in the deeper woods. I've got a box of them
somewhere I'll have to dig up and snap a picture some day. And most all of them are
nearly pristine with little deformation. I add my fair share, but I try to keep all mine in
pretty much one place, which is in the dirt backstop I use behind the targets.
