All of my family can be traced back to Francios Pierre Lusignan. A French fur traper who immigrated from Quebec into Indiana in the early 1800's.
On the tax roles one year he is listed as Francios Pierre Lusignan, the next year he was listed as Francis Lousignont. Obviously he attempted to Americanize his name and make it spell more like it sounded when pronounced.
Since then, there have been derivations of the name, one of those derivations is Tousignan, and Tousignant, but I have not seen it as Tousigant, bit I am sure it is probably part of my clan. Could be another derivation or perhaps a mispelling on the dog tag.
Francios was my Great Great Great grandfather and was married to a full blooded Indian Squaw known only as Mary. Apparently Francios was very patriotic and proud to be in America.
Three of his sons he named Benjamin Franklin, Geaorge Washington, and John Adams Lousignont.
I am descended from George. John got on the 1846 ?? wagon train to Oregon, and ended up leading the settlers to hunt down the Cayuse Indians that had slaughtered Marcus and Narcissa Whitman who were missionaries who ran an orphanage.
John is in the history books of Oregon as one of the early settlers, and their is a Lousignont, river, creek, and road named after him in Oregon.
Just a bit of trivia.
Thanks!
