WOT A BUST!

I haven't hunted much lately because of various obligations but did get out today with Guy and Austin for a while. We started out hunting a school built in 1926. I found the two Mercs, Guy got one too and Austin found 6 pennies in one hole! Then we hit a couple of fields we have hunted many times before.
The first one still had corn stalks so we didn't find much or stay there long. The second one was in great shape and we found a few good ones Guy found a couple Indians and a Shield nickel on top of the ground! Austin didn't hunt coins there but he did eyeball a really nice arrowhead! Made his day.
I was skunked for the first hour then I found the shield nickel. Usually when I find one there is another one close by in this field
Sure enough about 5 minutes after I got the nickel I get this deep hit that sounded really strange and was running up and down the right side of the screen. I dug a deep plug and went in with the probe and it hit really nice but not like silver and it was deeper. I pulled out another couple of scoops and pulled it up. I found it real quick with the X1 probe and when I saw it I knew it was a half dime but it was caked pretty good with dirt.
I waved it in the air to call the others over and while Guy and Austin were on the way I thought I had better try to clean it off a little and when I did I saw the banner above the eagle on the reverse and knew immediately it was BUST!! Sorry for the big picture but I wanted to show the detail on the half dime. It has some fertilizer stain but overall I think it came out pretty nice. It's my 3rd bust coin in three years and I'm excited about it if you can't tell
Didn't stay long after that because it was getting dark and the wind came up strong and cold so we came home. I'm hoping to be able to get back out there tomorrow. Should be a few more goodies in there. The interesting part is I had given up hunting the place because we pounded it so hard with the 10 inch coils last year. I know we hunted right were the half dime came out but I'll bet the stock coil went over it and just didn't see it.
I'm not as good as some of the other guys with the 10 inch coil but I do believe the WOT will go just a little deeper and either make the iffy coins obvious or pull in the ones to iffy that won't hit on the stock coil. The fields pose a special problem because it's almost impossible to scrub the coil. And when the crops start to come up you have to stay away from the plants so that makes it even tougher.
By the way before I forget (sorry for the extra long post) I want to give a BIG THANKS to DOC! When I got my WOT I was in a hurry to use it and was in a bean field without the right tools to put it on and I busted the head off of the plastic bolt. I asked Doc if he could help me out and he sent 2 sets of bolts and wing nuts immediately! NO CHARGE EITHER!! WOT A GUY!!!

Great coin Keith. I'll be making a road trip real soon to Indiana . I need to find some old coins soon. I just have a hard time here in Michigan to find any pre 1900 coins. Great find and good luck tomorrow.
Tom

Kieth Nice finds!! I dont totally agree with the thoughts on the WOT though. I have been using both coils extensively and now just switched back to the stock coil. The trick I discovered in trashier areas is to back off on sensitivity. It has opened a whole new arena of discovery. Last night found a hoard of indian cents and a nice liberty nickel 1910, 1885 indian 1901 indian 1907,,,,,,,1908 1904 and 1902 will send pics soon jim Michigan

Very nice Keith! I'm like you not much time to hunt right now. Things are very tough here finding coins in public places are very slim so I might not hunt much this summer. I even decided to sell my back up Explorer I hate to put another one out there I hope it sells to someone far away . As always if you get near give me a call I'll try swinging every now and then. How many Bust coins is that now? Good luck Ken

I agree. At first the WOT seemed to be harder to use and not an advantage over the stock however what I found out was the signals were different. I started digging iffy wierd signals with the WOT and a LOT of them turned out to be DEEP coins! When I say wierd I mean a strange kind of warble and not good solid hits. Some of the coins like the bust half dime even gave a low tone at first that pulled in with the X1 after I dug the hole. Wierd isn't it? Of course the shallower "standard" coins give you the standard strong signals. I think that's probably the difference. The WOT pulls in the oddball signals the stock coils is confused by and the ones the WOT is somewhat confused by the stock coil probably won't find in my opinion. Of course it depends a lot of the operator and conditions tho. If you are too tired, cold, hot whatever to mess with the iffy signals then you are probably missing coins. If the ground is rough (plowed), full of trash, has high grass, weeds, crops or leaves then you may not be able to get the coil close enough to find them. Also I found out like you did the sensitivity is very important. With the stock coil I ran at 32 auto all of the time. With the WOT I keep it anywhere from 26 to 12 depending on the site. Everytime I use it I learn something new. And if you haven't found out yet the WOT is a killer on coins standing on edge. Nice half by the way...did you dig that one??

It's hard to find pre 1900 coins in Indiana too these days. There have been a lot of Explorers (as well as other brands) around for several years now and the easy coins are picked out for the most part at the public sites. That's where the WOT comes in. I think it goes a few inches deeper than the stock coil and there are still layers of coins in some spots that are out of reach without it. Do you have a WOT? If not get one and hunt the places in your area where pre 1900 coins have been found. It will be interesting to see how you do...........

2 half dimes (both 1835) and an 1834 dime. One per year for the last 3! I think you will get the itch here pretty soon. All it will take is for somebody to pull out a nice seated half or gold coin right?

Kieth, very informative! will have to try your technique. Just went out for 45 minutes and found a nice 1909 barber dime and a 1907 indian with the stock coil. One thing is for sure, the ex2 is a very good machine The park I am having the luch in has been hammered by everybody...... Here is the other side of the 1/2 bust. It is my moms coin. Just thought id show it off Jim

Keith you would think maybe even a bust 1/2 dime might do the trick I am so busy, making real money has to come first but we do have many spots to try out down the road or should I say down the old raod that is no longer there Catch you later HH Ken

Keith, Congrats on the Bust half-dime! I'm sure she'll clean up nice!
Mike
