My husband, Tim, was swinging a sledge hammer, trying to drive a pin in to a link that holds the tracks together on one of his bulldozers. The pins are made of hardened steel, and instead of bending, they can break/crack/splinter/ or chip. He drew back and hit the thing as hard as he could, and on the very first hit, a chip flew off and went through his shirt and right into his side. It was a pretty big piece of metal that chipped off and hit him! He came in the house holding his side and bleeding profusely! He said he was sure it was in there somewhere because it had made a hole through his shirt. The hole in his side wasn't all that big (maybe 3/4 of an inch long), but we couldn't get the bleeding to stop. I guess it must have hit a blood vessel or something. Took him to the ER. The x-rays show that the metal is in there. The ER doctor wasn't able to dig it out and assumes it is deep enough that it can't be easily removed. She said that looking at the x-rays, she believes that it is embedded in the soft tissue and probably didn't penetrate the abdomen wall, or nick any organs. With it being the weekend, there weren't any surgeons there at the hospital to take a look. She told us that the general rule of thumb these days is to not remove a projectile unless they thought it was in a dangerous place. However, she said he should follow up with his regular doctor around the first of the week to get a second opinion. They gave him a tetanus shot, told him to watch for any signs of infection or other problems, and sent us home. The ER doctor might be 100% right, but we just don't feel comfortable about this. We're concerned about infections, or that the thing could move and cause a more serious problem. We aren't even positive it didn't do more damage than what they think. We have been told that he would not be able to have an MRI with that kind of metal in his body - so what happens if he needs an MRI for some reason down the road??? The x-ray technician told us that there was absolutely no way of telling exactly how deep it is just from the x-ray, and that it should probably be removed. The nurse was even telling us it would probably have to come out... and then the doctor strolls in and says not to worry about it. Tim is doing well; just sore, bruised, puffy, and achy in that area. He/we would feel much better if the thing was removed! Guess it will depend on what the regular doctor says. I would appreciate prayers for wisdom for the doctor(s), and safety and peace for us, regardless of the decision that is made.
On a lighter note: Tim doesn't metal detect, but asked me to get my detector out and see if it would pick up a signal when swinging it back and forth over his side... it did! Ha!
Thanks!
