Wow! GB=9

Tried a new place this evening....in front of a bar that was open from 1914 to the mid 1990's. I fully expect it to be nail and pull tab hell, but I was hoping to cherry pick some silver or clad.

Set up the detector and the ground balance was 9!! I left it in Auto Track. I checked it a couple of times as I went. Lowest I saw was GB=5. Highest I saw was 13.

On the way home, I think I figured out what was going on. It's REALLY wet(with puddles) right now...and kind of an alkali hole. Perhaps I'm getting into conditions similar to a saltwater beach?????

I'll have to try again tomorrow in Beach Mode and see what happens.

At it I am already used. Ground balance in our scene (field, meadowland, woods) is almost always under 10 (from 8 to 9), but it is in Czech Rep.

Petrl: What kind of depth on coins are you getting with that much mineralization ( 8-9 ) or are you a relic hunter ???

Wow! That is some very mineralized soil you're hunting. Definitely a site that calls for a DD coil. And if you're getting a lot targets close together, the smaller the coil the better. (6-inch DD). As to using Beach Tracking......I think the only difference you will find is that it will update the ground phase adjustment a bit quicker than regular tracking. Keep hitting that spot. Chances are that anyone else who may have hunted it, gave up out of frustration. JMHO HH Randy

Very wet ground and clay(with some rocks in the mix) caused a simular situation for me so much that the ground gave up very positive signals like a strong metal target with my X-70 with the 10.5" HF DD in both C&T(good numbers) and Prospecting Mode. I got a spade shovel and kept digging chasing a signal down.

I went home(the hole had a couple-few inches of water in it by then) and got my pulse induction Minelab GP-3000 with the stock 11" DD and there was NO metal in the hole or anywhere in the piles of dirt. Just a false response by my X-70. so a good lesson learned.

Why did I dig so deep? Because I was in a glacial rock area and you never know as it could be a gold, copper, or silver ore specimen or nugget there. I found a ~11 ounce silver nugget about a 20 minute drive from there in the past so a person never knows.

Thanks for the comments!

Didn't get back yet. Life got in the way.

I was using the 5x10 HF coil. Not sure if I should try Beach Mode while it's still wet or wait till it's dry. Either way(or both) I'll learn something. BTW normal ground balance(remember I'm a newbie...bought the 70 in December) seems to be about 20. Add in some salt from an alkali hole(saline seep).....

Only trouble is...if I wait until it drys out...it turns to pavement. I don't think the locals(friends/neighbors) would appreciate me bringing out the backhoe to dig up a few quarters. :)

Still...I'm aiming for the 2 hotels a block away. Both built in '14....one torn down in the early 20's...the other burned in the late 20's. Cow pasture ever since.

The only other "Detector" in the whole area, was a guy that had a White's Apollo in the late 70's????. Don't know which model yet. :bouncy::wiggle: Basically virgin ground. BUT...it is FARMER virgin ground. So I don't expect much.

But the Bar? Don't know if I have a deep enough detector for the mineralization and/or salt. It's soggy ground every spring. Coins will go DOWN quickly. Like I said, I have a lot to learn.

SO much fun. And I haven't even TRIED to look for meteorites yet. THAT'S what I bought a detector for. :twodetecting:

To Mtnmn : The depth on common ( it's small) copper coins is around 6'' maybe after rain (wet ground) a litle more.

That is good depth for that bad of ground, it is as good as I get and my ground reads in mid to upper twenties, but my ground also has higher than normal salinity content too.
