X-Terra 30

How would the X-Terra 30 stack up against the Garrett Ace 350 or Fisher F2? I know the 30 is an older unit but I haven't used Minelab before and I saw an X-Terra 30 on Craigslist.

Those early XTerra 30's are brilliant in the way they ID coinage and I still rank them ahead of anything sold today, including the three XTerra's we have now, for straight out fast coin hunting over any terrain inland, trashed or not.

They got it right with the pre-set ground balance on them, and can be trusted over both heavy and changing ground. They'd ID a coin with a clarity not seen before, all three in the range did, and give jumping segments for ferrous targets quick smart, along with giving you a good ability to size a target.
When I picked my first one up I got a 70 a few weeks later after waiting for them to hit the shelves, and did many hours with them head to head. The 30 was much easier to hunt with.
They are at their happiest accepting all metal and place the ID quickly and concisely.
The other two you mentioned find the good stuff as well, and carry roughly the same ' no frills ' features, but they are many steps behind the XTerra 30 in ID'ing coinage verses junk.

If you're in the market for a detector, regardless of how cheap you find an XTerra 30 for, I'd probably say do yourself a favour and buy a brand new XTerra 305. There's so much more you can do with them!

Thanks for the info, Argyle. I'll repost if I get the 30 or a 305, as you suggest.

You're welcome. Looking forward to reading how it treats you.
There are many wise men on here to give you a heads up on the XTerra, should you need help identifying problems you may occur with it, so you won't be alone.

I picked up a 305 early in the year off of Ebay at a good price. I loved it so much I got a 705 a few months later for all the bells and whislles tio see what I was missing. The u705 is a more versitle but if i only had the 305 I coiuld survive, it's a beast for the $$.
