I have been looking at the 305 recently as a backup detector. Can anyone tell me about the performance, depth, problems, etc. with the X-terra 305?
I have mainly owned Fisher and Tesoro detectors and presently own a Fisher CZ5 and a Tesoro Cortes for coin and jewelry hunting.
Basically what I'm looking for is a good solid coin detector with good depth and discimination abilities. Any help would be appreciated.....thanks,
HI!! I HAVE THE XTERRA 305 AND REALLY LIKE IT. THE DEPTH IS GOOD. I CHANGED TO THE 10.5 INCH 7.5HZ. DOUBLE D COIL. I SEEM TO GET BETTER DEPTH AND TARGET SEPARATION. PLUS MORE AREA COVERED.IVE DUG COINS 8-9 INCHES DEEP,SO DON'T THINK I'M MISSING MUCH. I GO TO TEXAS FOR THE WINTER. LOTS OF FALSE SIGNALS IN THE WET SAND. THE DOUBLE D COIL IS SUPPOSED TO HELP THIS. I WILL KNOW THIS DECEMBER. I LIKE THE EASY TO LEARN CONTROLS. THE DISCRIMINATION WORKS GREAT. I RECOMMEND NEW ENGLAND DETECTORS. THE OWNER,ANDREW IS A GREAT HELP AND THEY HAVE GREAT PRICES.. HOPE THIS HELPS, JIM
Jim, thanks for the post about the 305. I'm going to give a 305 a try. I think it will work great as a backup to my other detectors. thanks and happy hunting.....
i boughtthe 305 last weekend and love it. already found 2 rings and yesterday found a 1907 indian penny and a 1922 buffalo nickel at an average dept of 5 inches.the deepest was 8 inches. .very good detector. i would suggest it
YOU MIGHT LIKE THE 305 SO MUCH,YOU GET RID OF YOUR OTHER DETECTORS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT IN THE OWNERS MANUAL WHERE IT COMPARES THE 305 AND THE 505,IT SAYS THAT THE 505 DEPTH IS "ENHANCED". I FEEL; THAT THE 305 HAS GREAT DEPTH,BUT I CANT HELP BUT WONDER WHAT THIS DIFFERENCE WOULD BE.. COMMENTS? I HAVE FOUND THAT A 16-20 READING IS ALL WAYS A PULL TAB. A NICKEL IS A 12-16 A DIME IS USUALLY A 32. A PENNEY IS A 36-38 AND A QUARTER IS A 40 WHAT DO YOU FIND?
HAPPY DIGGING, JIM
If you live in an area with mineralized soil, which can be defined on the 305 as soil requiring a ground balance number lower than 8, then I can tell you from experience that you are not going to get any depth with a stock concentric coil. My depth is slightly better with the 6inch DD 18.75khz than the 9 inch concentric.
I love minelab, but I could have gotten an Ace 350 with a DD coils for cheaper, or a ATPro for about the same price of adding the extra coil! and been better than the stock 305 with either. I thought about getting an ATPro but got an ETrac instead.
I knew something was up when 100 year old parks only had coins on the surface, and junk deep. BTW I am still having problems finding silver with the ETrac.
Ryan, I live in mid western Illinois and my soil isn't mineralized. I have owned several turn on and go detectors over the years and they all worked great here and I expect the 305 will work great also.
I have owned 3 Garrett detectors over a 30 year span and never found them to my liking. They seemed to have very little depth and that constant bong bong sound drove me crazy. I won't be buying another Garrett detector
anytime soon, and this includes the at pro. Way too many problems with the at pro for me. If my 305 doesn't work out for some reason I will sell it and buy another Tesoro product. I still have my CZ5 with 3 coils that I love hunting with and really don't need anything else, but I do enjoy
trying a new detector like most other people. After all my research on the 305 I'm sure it will do everything I ask of it and probably more. I like its simplicity, it's lightweight, and it has many nice features for a detector in its price range. My 305 is due here tomorrow and you can bet it will
be getting a workout tomorrow afternoon at an old park near me. Thanks for your post.......
