X-terra 705 coils

Bought Gold Pack Edition, came with the 5"x10" elliptical DD coil. Want to get one additional coil for coins, jewelry, relics. What size and what frequency and which type coil do you recommend?

The coil you have will find you coins. You can ask 20 people and get twenty answers. I like my stock coil which is a 7.5 khz 9 inch coil. I like the 6 inch dd for trash , which I have heard the coil you have is pretty good in trash also. The 10.5 dd are better in mineralized ground and also cover more ground. I have heard that the 3khz coils are good on silver and copper. I just oredered one of those this week. I bought my 6 inch dd from Beale on this forum and that little coil goes pretty deep . I have found coins in trash that I missed with the stock coil. My next coil will be a 10.5 inch 18 khz coil or 10.5 7khz for relics.

That 5x10" DD HF is a great coil for coins.
Precise pinpointing, and target seperation for close together coins .
Light, smooth base slides over lawn ...handles mineralisation.
I hunt coins 90% of the time.
Since I took off the standard concentric and put it on I cant take it off.

I'm with T59, hunt mostly coins and some yellow metal, have all the coils and now don't change it from the 5x10" DD HF.

I'm pretty much with the boys on this one. I have been using the 6in concentric coil which I really like, but the 5x10 is just deadly. Fantasic target seperation and light. The only other coil I'd consider, would be the 6in DD coil for real trashy spots.

I ended up ordering the 9" concentric MF as a secondary coil and as one I can submerge for hunting along creek and river banks. I do agree, the 5x10 is great coil.

I bought the 5X10 DD HF last week and it's a killer coin finder. Excellent pinpointing. Target is always right under where the rod connects to the coil. Doubt I'll put the stock coil back on although I think it's a deeper finding coil than the 5X10. That's just my personal observation between the two. Anyone else have an opinion on the depths of these two coils?

Yes the 5X10 DD is great. I took it off last night for the first time since I put it on about 4 months ago. I replaced it with the stock 9in MF CC coil coz I went out to the beach and I wanted to try water detecting. Blech - this 9in stock coil is not that good compared to the 5x10 DD. I went on a park area with the 9in CC and again it did not perform that well compared to the 5x10 that I have gotten used to.

Much easier to pinpoint with the DD coil too. Wizzo said that the target is under the bit where the coil connects to the rod. I pinpoint by scanning L to R then once the target is locked, I ease the coil backwards until the tone disappears and then the target is right at the nose of the coil.

Now I just need to find a 10.5 in MF DD coil...... so expensive here in Oz...

I'll have to try that one snoop. I was using the 5X10 today. Love that coil. Sounds like it will make using it easier that way.

I think you'll be good with the 5x10 coil. I use the 10.5" HF coil 85% of the time for coin hunting. I seem to do best with the HF coils. That being said, I've learned over the last few months that even if I think I've found everything in an area with the HF coil, I switch to the 10'5" MF coil and Ialways find a few more coins. Never hurts to have a second coil. If you decide to buy another coil, your ground mineralization and hunting area will determine what additional coil would be best for you.

Is it too late to change your order, I would have ordered the 9" concentric LF (3 kHz) as a secondary coil instead of the MF. The LF is better for coins, ID's iron better, and still will pick up gold jewelry just fine.

Thanks, this thread is an eye opener on the 5x10 HF DD, and some real good information here. Yes heavier but IMO, in less trashy areas where targets are further apart, the round 10.5" (MF or MF) DD is a better choice I do think.

People may assume all low frequencies(2 to 5 kHz) are no good on gold without actually experimenting. We had this discussion before, some time ago I asked Randy(Digger) to experiment on a fine gold ring on his 3 kHz coil and it worked fine. I have a 5 kHz Musky and it works great on about 1/16" to 1/8" thickness gold. You will find the 3 kHz does work good on thin gold rings, better than you think. I would not hesitate to use the 3 kHz(LF) coil for gold as a side to looking for coins. I would rather have and use a LF coil over a MF coil anyday. I wish the X-Terra's came with the LF coil as a stock coil, IMO.
