X- Terra in the snow

So I've been going a little crazy because of the weather and just dying to do some detecting here in NE Indiana, there is 12 inches of snow still on the ground but I just had to try it. Much to my surprise I was still able to find targets down to 6 inches in the ground through the snow with the 10.5 inch MF coil on 505 , I'm not complaining just trying to understand how this is working ,all Tid's were acurate ,pulltabs sounded like pulltabs , iron sounded like iron and coins sounded like coins . Just curious on how the coil reacts through the snow , any thoughts ?

Well, I would imagine that since 12" of snow equals about 1" of water and 11" of air, it probably works pretty close to air.

We've had some pretty decent finds in the snow. TID's can be a little off depending on how much the ground is saturated underneath the snow.

I found this love token/pendant carved out of an Argentine Peso and it was about 8 inches down in an area that I had detected a few times before when at least the outdoor conditions were much more favorable. On this day the ground was not frozen all the way down and once I got so deep the hole kept filling in with water.

I'm glad that you guys were able to find somethings when their was snow and the ground being froze but the few times that I have tried it I just could not get any depth and I use the X505 with the 10.5 MF DD coil.

So you can actually dig a hole 6" to 8" inches down through the frost? Anywhere in the upper Midwest I'm guessing there has to be at least a foot of frost in the ground. What do you use for digging?

I sharpen up my lesche with a fine file and it slices through fozen ground pretty well

 That's not going to work here! You couldn't drive a Lesche into the ground with a sledgehammer right now.

are you in eastern Canada?
My location is in my sigline......Michigan. Might as well be Canada. :(
The ground here has been frozen too hard to dig for about 2 months, and it's going to be another 2 or so before we'll thaw enough to get back to it.

They say that in upper Iowa we have at least 2 foot of frost and for the past month we have not seen temps much above zero.... No MDing for me, I've been ice fishing every weekend :)

I hear you Mark. I've been trapping coyote and raccoon. But here in central Indiana it's been mighty cold and mighty snowy. Come on Spring!
