X-terra's and $$$$ L@@KING For Help

New member
Well i am New to Metal Detecting and i live up in the Sierra Mountains of California, I have only lived up here for about 2 years but there still seams to be allot of History and gold up here, So i started to do research on Metal Detecting and found that the X-terra 70 might be the perfect fit for me. But the prob is I don't know if i can spend that kinda money on the X70 and the extra coils.

My friend here has the Whites Gold bug and likes that one allot but still allot of $$$ and i am just drawn allot more to the X-terra i don't know why.

So my 1st Questions to you are If i do go with the X70 and i can get 1 Coil for right now (besides the stock one) what one should i get?
2nd question IF i cant pull the trigger on the X70 but maybe could go with the X305 as a second choice what would be a good coil to use with that one?
3rd Am i over my head since i don't really know what i am doing, should i start off with an easier Metal Detector.

Wow i really like reading all of your post so thanks for any help you can offer to me.

Aaron

Welcome to the site! Glad to have you on.

As you know the 705 replaced the 70. Some 70's are going for very good deals right now. While you do not have to have a 2nd coil you may want one.

Have you read the FAQFAQ section at the top of the forum? if not I would read up on it a bit. The 70 or the 705 are great machines and very user friendly. The 70 mis my 1st MD and I really enjoy it. Good luck to you, Beale.

Beale is right. There's some good deals out there on practically new X-70's. By all means read the FAQFAQ might just give you the info you are looking for to decide which one to go with. The X-70 has lots of little tricks that can be done with it and is VERY easy to learn. I bet that probably within 2 weeks you will feel very comfortable with it.Good Luck. By the way what part of the Sierras are you at?? I used to live in Bishop. If you are near Bishop I could set you up with my brother there. He is a detecting fool.

Certainly would have a distinct bearing on what coil to recommend...If you are basically going to be nugget hunting personally would buy a unit just made for this purpose..
Judging by your post perhaps you are a bit over your head and might recommend a used X-terra with the stock 7.5 freq. coil till you get the hang of it before going all out for the new X-terra line with a bunch of coils that could be a drain on your wallet. Can always upgrade if you stay in hobby with a minimal loss at best...

The X-Terra 70 with the 5X10 18.75kHz coil would be a good setup for gold hunting according to everything I have read. The 7.5kHz coil that comes stock with the 70 is a very good all around coil. Down the road you may consider a 3kHz coil for coin shooting. Check the classified add section and you will find from time to time real good deals on coils. I just bough a $149.00 3kHz coil for $75.00 dollars. Welcome and HH TomB

Thanks to everyone

Yeah i don't want to get burnt out before i really get the hang of it lol that is why i did not know if i should start out with the 305 because you can still use the 18.75kHz with that one right?

So i see the 3kHz for Silver and coins and 18.75kHz for little gold nuggets,

I was asking because i have read allot of others post and the survey at the top of the forums everyone said they would choose another coil instead of the 7.5kHz stock one, so i thought this one might be kinda crappy.

There is so much history up here i don't know if i should look for gold or old coins/relics i live up near Jamestown CA (that is Back to the Future 3 was Filmed) it is like a cowboy town, and what is more they are repaving the main street right now so they are pulling up the old road, ( I don't even know if i can metal detect down there legally but i would really like to.

Well thanks again for your help and advice

Welcome ninjaswinger,
here are my 2 cents
If just for nuggets I would likley buy a gold machine I'd love to have a Minelab gold machne. I have also heard the Tesoro Lobo Supertrak is a great machine and also (I have read) works good for coins.

If you are like me I would buy an Xterra 705, It has the updated programing compared to the XT70. I bought mine because I wanted a cutting edge do it all machine.

For Gold they say the 5x10 HFDD coil is super sensitive and will find super fine gold, and the 10.5 HFDD coil isn't as sensitive to the very fine but does go deeper. I have the 5x10 HFDD as my 2nd coil but havn't been up to northern Wa to hunt for gold yet, but that coil does seperate coins from trash pretty darn good. I will likely buy a 10.5 HFDD when I am a little more flush for cash. This is because I don't really intend on doing to much panning and would like to find nuggets. I have a friend at work who uses an XT70 with the stock coil for gold in north Idaho and Montana and does find it with that coil.

Hey Guys is the st705 better than the XT705???

I'm still a newb!!! Don't forget there is a learning curve that can only be navigated with use and time. Ask lots of questions and find someone to hunt with or ask questions to, who has one of these machines or is familiar with them. Go back and reread and then reread the manual after use.

with patients it is a worthwhile hobby.

Good Luck
Jeff

Stock 7.5klhz coil is a good one ive found rings and some nice coins with mine dont let it fool ya.I have the 18.75klhz as well but like my 7.5klhz stock. What you can do if you want a machine that will use all 3 coils is ieghter get a nice used xterra 70 or a nice used xterra 505 on ebay or on the forums good luck. Also if you dont mind tossing out the 3klhz coil wich i hear is a good coil for silver and coins than i saw a nice used xterra 305 wich i have and love for 299.00 on ebay the other day.

Thanks for the GREAT info everyone

And thank you wade tx for telling me about the XT70 for sale i went there as soon as i saw your post and sent him a message but he sold it already, i will keep checking eBay and the forums.
