I was wanting to know if you are using the probe and find a deep target when you dig down about 5 in and put the probe in the hole can you tell if it is silver or a rusty nail by the sound if it is about 3in deeper in the ground.Hunting with iron mask on-16 also I think the exp 11 has give me a bad habit i don't want to dig any targets less then 4 to 5 in at places I have hunted in past.

The X-1 seems to discriminate a little better than the stock coil. If you find an old rusty nail that is giving out a false silver sound the X-1 will generally "see" it as iron rather than silver.

I've fallen into that bad habit as well - I will often ignore most targets in the first 4" or so. Probably not a good idea for the long haul, but if you only have a little time you can pull more of the deeper older targets this way. I found that Barber dime yesterday at 3" - 4" which was a surprise - I've rarely found shallow silver in these parts though some say they find it shallow.

Better I.D than the stock coil. Sometimes you will get a good signal at 1st, then after a little digging the probe will let you know not to waste your time. Sunray's X-5 & X-12 are also excellent!!!

If your Ignoring Shallower Targets you probably are walking over some Jewelry.

I just got mine and its awesome, especially in pinpoint mode, talk about saving time, forget about it. Warning, make sure you switch into pinpoint mode after you hit the switch to turn on the probe or it gets erratic and unstable.

I have found a Barber and Seated dime at about an inch this year..I guess we will never understand why some targets fall deep and other not especially when we are from different areas hunting in different ground...As Greg related to also many fairly new drops may yield a nice gold ring....

Dan also remember that old coins get dropped recently as well, my partner stopped by the other evening after hunting the mulch in a local school yard and surprise surprise he found a merc and a rosie along with some clad. I am betting the kid rifled through some of the family collection to get coins and dropped them before he got to use them.

Not sure what you are talking about here with it becoming unstable if you don't switch to pinpoint. I have one and hunt with several other guys who also have them and none of us have ever had a problem with this.

Very possible...silver is still in circulation, friend of mine got 3 silver dimes in change the other day. Would bet there was a roll of silver dimes in that register....

If you are in pinpoint on the SE and switch from the detector to the probe while still having the detector in pinpoint it will just let out this retched scream. However if you are not in pinpoint, lets say your in discrim or digital and then switch on the probe, and then hit pinpoint, it works fine. I have no idea why this happens on my SE, but when I bought the SE and the probe from sun ray, I was told that's what would happen, and it does. It only happens when I'm in pinpoint mode and switch on the probe.

Why even use pinpoint? Slows the detecting down. Plus that tone id is nice to have after you dig the plug.

I'm not so sure about the silver in rolls of coins...The coin counter at my local credit union will actually spit silver coins back out at you...The manager demonstrated this to me the first time I used it.

I use the tone id , but when i use pinpoint it helps me be more precise so i dont nick the coin.
