I know neither is considered top of the line but that aside for fresh water hunting which one would you keep? I recently purchased both but only need one of them as a backup for my excal or if my wife wants to come along, so one is going up for sale the other I will keep.
1. deepth?
2. sensitivity to gold big or small
3. chains?
can either be modified?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have the answers to those questions.
Do a test with different objects, it's the only way.
The Surfmaster can be modified to increase it's sensitivity. Go to link below.
