XP DEUS OPTIMUM HEADPHONE IMPEDANCE

Desert Don

New member
I can find no info. on the manufacturer's site or this forum regarding the optimum head phone impedance for the XP DEUS. Does anyone have that info? Not interested in guesses or "what works or doesn't work" in the field. I need the specific ohm value that the factory recommends for the WS4 BackPhones with Clip Jack Adapter and for the Ear Phone output on the Full Remote Control. Thank you.

Call XP America, I have called them and they are great to work with.

Thank you all. 32 ohms sounds right but will verify with Detector Electronics Corp. on Monday and will post to the forum for others.

Just read Andy's review of the Vance Phones … Exactly what I was looking for without all the DYI hassle! Thank you so much! PS: Don't tell anybody else how good they are. :) :)

UPDATE: Took deusdigger's advice - called Detector Electronics Corp. What a great bunch of folks! They will talk to France to get the specs on recommended impedance match for aftermarket headphones (when using the XP ClipJack adaptor with the Back Phone Controller or … straight out of the XP Full Remote Control).

You might ask … "So what's with the big fuss about the impedance match on headphones!". Ignore the impedance recommendations for a specific detector, get it significantly wrong on your choice of aftermarket headphones and it can seriously impact the audio response you receive through your headphones. Yes, quality of the speakers in the headphone is important BUT, if there is a major impedance mismatch between detector and after-market headphone you could end up hearing only a fraction of what your XP Deus is trying to tell you! And, just because you have a set of phones that are Aces with more than one of your other detectors, doesn't mean they are the best match for your XP.

Case in point: check out the on-line "shoot-out" reviews between the new Vance Muffs and the Grey Ghost units complete with video and AUDIO. I'm not throwing rocks at the Grey Ghost units - I use them, I swear by them on several of my other high-end detectors BUT, are they the best match for the XP? Listen and compare the audio info coming out of each set of phones in the on-line review, also read Andy's review then you decide. With that much difference in sound quality, a guy's gotta' ask - wow, is it a speaker quality issue or an impedance mismatch issue or both?

And for you electronically inclined do-it-yourselfers, I'll post France's response as soon as I get it.

Good Grief - Talk about customer service! Detector Electronics Corp. is already back to me with an answer straight from the XP folks in France. These folks are serious about customer relations!

France's answer to the above question is "16 to 32" ohms with the caveat that "other impedances can be use". Of course the issue was never "what could be used" but rather which phones produced the most useable audio info.

Kudos to forum member "ecoast" for hitting it on the money.

Just happened to find some really good two year old coverage of this topic this morning from Reg Sniff over on NUGGETSHOOTER.COM under the heading of "Detector Headphones - which are suitable for detectors?

Thanks again to all - love the good, helpful attitude of this forum.

I have tried the Gray Ghosts and the Vance Muffs with the Deus. The Vance Muffs has better sounds but as previously posted, the Vance Muffs ear pads are too thin and too small for my ears. I solved this by gluing a larger set ear pads over the the stock Howard Lieght pads.

Thanks sprchng. Are Vance muff ear cups smaller than, say, Grey Ghost?

I think the cup size is equivalent but as cginn said the padding is too thin and compressible for the pressure of the headband and adjustments--smashes the grate inside right down into the ear. Ironically , I did the exact same thing as cginn and glued the padding from a set of hearing protectors from Harbor Freight to them and made them much better--brilliant minds think alike :) I have used the Grey Ghosts plugged into both the remote as well as the WS4 and clip and found the sound through the remote superior to all but I've also become very accustom to the backphones. Now that cooler weather is arriving I will re-attempt to use the Vance muffs with my modification.

I have these expensive Sony headphones that I always used with my Etrac. They sound fantastic on the Etrac, but I plugged them in on the Deus and they sounded like poop. :)
