Hi,
I'm getting out of frozen Alaska (7 degrees in Anchorage right now) for a few days in Mexico. It is a short business trip but there will be some detecting time available also.
The X-Terra is a great travel unit... one of the best I've ever owned. I have not felt a need to screw the pod on the end of the handle. Mine is quite firmly attached by just popping it into the end of the handle. And now that it is time to travel, it pops right off.
Just a couple minutes to unscrew the coil from the pod and lower rod, and unscrew the armrest. I'm putting the XT50 in my carry-on as I do not check bags when going to Mexico. Slows me down way too much at customs, and the risk of loss is higher in Mexico. But taking the X-Terra all apart is no effort at all.
My only concern was the lower rod, which some have complained is too long. Well, at 5' 11" it is fine for me. Still, I was worried it would not fit into my little American Tourister carry-on. But I was pleasantly surprised when it went right in the bag like it was designed for it. Plenty of room for my Wilcox plastic beach scoop and trash pouch. I'll wrap the pod in a shirt or something. I'm all set and will be detecting in a couple days!
