G'day Guys and Gals,
i'd just like to introduce myself before subjecting you all to months of questions and (touch wood) photos of finds.
i'm the proud new owner of an x-terra 70 with standard concentric and the DD gold coil. i've used friends detectors in the past, and also spent a lot of time over the years prospecting the "hard way" - most of it in SE queensland and SE gippsland.
i've recently moved from toowoomba, QLD to hobart, and i wanted a detector that would enable me to scout for coins/relics/jewellery as well as seriously prospect for gold in alluvial areas, without (yet) spending $6,500 on a GPX.
anyhow, i got it today after a month of shafting and mis-delivery attempts by good old australia post.
i'm pretty impressed with it, in comparison to what ive used - a couple of GPs, and a couple of much older garrets. it's light, responsive, portable, and not even thinking about asking for a battery change.
so far the only feature it dosent seem to have that i'd like it to is a backlight for the LCD - not everyone prospects only in the daytime.
anyway, its a killer on playgrounds, thats for sure. the first one i went to it unearthed 2 $2 coins in the first 2 minutes. the pinpoint worked perfectly and depth indicator was pretty close too.
i'm obviously months away from working out the various combinations of settings, but i have noticed that various types of foil and ring pulls/crushed cans seem to give readings ranging from 2 right up to 18 - which is a pain in the arse because i'm digging them all in case gold or silver jewellry is among them - reputed to read 6 or 8 mostly. maybe someone can give me some tips there.
the settings ive been using in general, in parks, playgrounds, and old historic sites are -
coin mode
sensitivity 12-15
threshold 25-29
noise - auto
ground balance - auto
all metal mode, switching to pattern 1 for targets below 20
if that helps.
anyway overall, its as good as i expected, better even, and im sure once ive used it for a few months i'll get used to it, with a little help from *ahem* you guys ;]
thanks for reading this far and thanks in advance for any advice you can offer me.
and if anyone else is detecting tassie, i'm always up for some company!
cheers
joe
