Xterra 70 And Pistol Probe

New member
Hi Guys
Just recieved my Pistol Probe from kellyco. Oh my God these two put together are unbeatable. I was digging $2.00 Coins at 4-5 inches
First i would locate the coin with the X terra using the tonal and target id, Then using the Pistol probe i was pinpointing spot on to the coin. Then i was digging this coin with a screwdriver and popping it out of the ground. Within 20 minutes of detecting i had $20.00 in coins. The Pistol probe is unbelievable, sure the initial cost is quite a bit, but my pinpointing now is expert. The Pistol Probe was picking up coins at 6 inches deep easily. I was detecting an area that had been hunted out. I went real slow and covered an area of about 50 ft square and found all this in such a short time!. As i said i love my Xterra70 And now with the Pistol probe it's even Better!. I would recommend the Pistol probe to anyone wanting an excellent pinpointer, This is the best you can get.

Congrats on the new probe! I have read very goo things about the Pistol Probe. I like reading real world conditions! Good hunt for sure, Beale.

I also have this combination as well, the X-70 and Pistol Probe. I am in a deep freeze here now and cannot use either on the frozen ground. But I bought the Pistol Probe towards late last October and only used it briefly. I bought a hand held lumber Wizzard(to find nails in wood lumber while sawing or planing) before that and it got about 1" maximum. Then I got the Pistol Probe, my goodness what depth!! I got a air test signal on a US nickle I measured at about 5", wow!(can be tuned to get more or less depth). I did research ahead of time and it is substantially deeper than the Garrett Pro-Pointer but is also more bulkier.

When I used the Pistol Probe after first getting a signal with the X-70, it was so exact and deep in the ground it was spot on. I will never hunt without a pinpointer again after getting spoiled. The Garrett would be my second choice.

I also use an XT-70. I do alot of Gold prospecting here in the mountains. I bought a Pistol Probe a few week back based on the videos and demonstrations I have seen. I find that the Pistol Probe not to be satisfactory for Gold prospecting . Most often the size of the nugget is small, odd shaped and hard to see in the sand, dirt, and gravel so the Pistol Probe only puts you in the general area, but you still have to scrutinize scoops of material very closely. I also carry a Vibraprobe and I find it more suitable to prospecting. You can drag it through the material and it will let you know when your on target. The Vibraprobe is especially good for searching shallow pools of water for nuggets lying in sand and gravel. However, all this being said I feel the Pistol Probe is an outstanding pin-pointer when it comes to coins , relics, etc. Because of the shape and size of these targets and the range of the Pistol Probe, collection of coin and relic targets take much less digging and time. Just my opinion. However as you know: Opinions are like belly buttons, everybody has one.

That's a very impressive depth for a $2 coin Gary.I have the older Pocket probe and it is good for 3 to 3.5 inches on a $2 coin. I had considered buying the Pistol probe, but wanted a smaller one instead. so I bought the Pro pointer a few weeks back.
Are they being sold over here that you know about?
Mick Evans.

My Vibra Probe 570 had to be sent back to I ordered the Pistor Probe and have used it twice now....

I love the depth... once you pull the pug... you know where the target is.... UNLESS... its a thin piece of flat foin in the plug...

Likes:
Depth, Depth, Depth!

Dislikes...
I use the Black Widwo headphones... same manufacturer as Pistol and you have to take one ear off to use probe
In a noisy environment - Its NOT loud enough... road noise, train noise, harbor noise...
Uts a little unwieldy... and does not stay in the pouch nicely at all times...

So I will use the 570 + Pistol both depending on the times and where I am hunting... the 570 does not require me to remove headphone... vibration is great at telling how close you are....

Can I just combine all the features into a newly designed product :)

Again, I've only been out twice... about 4-5 w/Pistol and it worked great... and I"m sure in time the MINOR dislikes will fade...

Just my 2 cents!
Paul

Congrats on buying a Pistol probe you will LOVE it.
I've found with mine, it took a couple of outing's to get used to it.
I've found that you don't have to poke around in the dirt like other probes, as this sets off the probe.
Just wave it above the dirt like a magic wand and hey presto its like magic!
And dont have the threshold set to high as this causes the probe to false sound if you wave it around in the air.

Using this probe i have increased my finds forfold. I dont rummage around in the dirt or make huge plugs or holes to
recover my finds. I use a gator digger which makes a 1" square plug and usually the target is in the plug. If not i loosen the soil in the hole with a screwdriver and place the dirt on a rubber mat (old truck inner tube cut to size) Then wave the Pistol Probe above the soil
And recover my target. this takes me all of approximately 30 seconds. (i've timed myself).
Im Going to make a video of me doing this proceedure and post it on youtube with a link from this forum for others to see.
Hope this information is usful to someone!

Is the probe, 'Hot' all along the probe or just at the tip?

I just got the pistol probe today and I too have to say IT GOES DEEP!. It does pick up on the first 3-4 inches of the shaft but its most sensitive at the tip! The side of the shaft that does pick up only seems to do so for about 1-2 inches away but the tip air tested for me 5-6 inches on all coin sizes. Its still winter here but based on my tests I am sure this probe will pay for itself in short order!. THE BANG IS WORTH THE BUCK!!!. Buy it you wont be sorry!

Very good reports all of you guys. I want to see your video Gary. From memory Adelaide had a powder type sand on the ocean beach, must be good for soft digging and hunting there.

I do not have it here in front of me but in storage for the winter.(Lots of snow and severe cold here in northern Alberta today, about -17 to 18'C or about 0'F. Sadly our family dog died yesterday so I had to drag him in the knee joint deep snow a ways in the bush and leave him there. Impossible to hand dig in frozen ground.) I also wanted to know this before I bought mine and when I got it, I then tested it and the Pistol Probe is 'Hot' about 3/4 the way up the shaft that has a total length of 6.5". Meaning about 4.5" to 5" 'Hot' up the shaft. Not only 'Hot' but also deep off of the sides as well so a person can side scan large piles of dirt quickly!! Is like using a 4" or 5" metal detector coil in swath coverage!!

Some pinponters may be only good on the tip but not the Pistol Probe!

I think the Garrett Pro-Pointer can side scan too but not as deep.
I do not know about the Vibra-Probe 570's side scanning? I heard it was only near the tip but I have not tried it. The Vibra-Tector 730 has a 4" coil and the Pistol Probe can side scan at least 4" as well so it acts the same to cover a wide swath. The Pistol Probe is deeper than all of the above.

It picks up down the sides for 2". But it's most sensitive at the tip, The round end of the tip is where you dig straight down onto
you're target.

Sorry David to hear your dog died. Its such a heart renching moment.
In Adelaide we average 17degrees celcius in winter. And summer the average is about 32degrees celcius.
The soil conditions range from powdery sand at the beach and rock hard in the gold fields.
So we can detect all year round here. When i do the video i will show the area im detecting and soil conditions to show you all what
it's like.

Thanks for that Gary, our dog had a long life of old age, still sad. He was kept in a garage with a heated floor so he was warm. His name was Dingo and he was jet black in color. He looked like a black dingo. Your wild dingos are blond.

We were at minus -17'C today and you are +17'C in the winter you said. I have been in Australia during your winter and I prefer yours by a long shot. Funny thing we have lots of Australians living here I really cannot figure that out as I prefer the warm weather and year around gardening. We now have tomato, cabbage plants, and giant pumpkins started in the heated garage with a grow light.

One point you made was that your Pistol Probe only gets 2" up the shaft, I cannot figure that out. Re-check yours again.

Mine got about 4.5"(4 and 1/2") up the shaft with a deep strong signal off to the side of the probe shaft. At least double what you got. I do not have it here as it is in storage but I will get it and do the test again tomorrow but I am sure I am right.

You said it gets more depth in the ground than in an air test do you mean? I never tried this comparison out yet.

David
What happens to coins that have been in the ground, some for years and years, even before you or i were born.
During that time they leech out oxides into the surrounding soil around the coin, This then makes the coin appear twice the size
to a metal detector.Hence you pick up these signals alot stronger than if you would doing an air test.
David if you are interested i put a metal detecting video up on youtube"metal detecting an aussie $2.00 Coin" in this video im using my old whites pinpointer, Bullseye 2. As you can see i have to poke into the soil to get a signal. The pinpointer has to just about touch the coin to get any signal. On the other hand , with the Pistol Probe i would wave it above the soil mound and get a signal. The garretts and the Whites pinpointers have not got a touch on the Pistol Probe, This baby kicks ass.

Thanks Gary.
I bought mine from David of Dixie Detectors. I found him to be top notch.
I think that the Pistol probe is a much better unit than the pocket probe. There's no cable to worry about, which is a major bonus, It goes deeper and is cheaper. About the only unit that will come close for depth is the in-line probe. I can't blame you for being happy with it.
