Hello everyone! I own an exterra 705. I've had it less than a year! The other day I went for a short hunt and noticed that my detector was acting very strange. It was reading pennies as dimes and just being very weird. can anyone help me? I tried it out a fee times since then and still get the same result! Is my machine broke? Or is there something I need to do to make it right again? Please help me! I'm so lost! Thank you very much!

To do a factory preset, turn your detector off and then hold in on your Menu button while turning your detector back on until a large FP appears on your screen. This information can be found not only in your manual, but I'm almost certain in the FAQ section at the top of this page. It's wise to do a factory preset at least once a month to keep your XT in top operating condition. You can also erase your custom patterns by holding in on the Pattern button during the startup sequence until PE appears....

This information can be found on pg. 46 of your XT-705 manual and Pg. 44 of the XT-70 manual. Also you only need to hold in on either your Menu or Patterns button until the startup sequence has begun rather than waiting until either FP or PE to appear. It took a little over a year before My XT-70 started acting like your 705 and a Factory Preset cleared everything up and even appeared to give me a little better depth. The XT's can also start acting weird just before the batteries are ready to give out...

Keep in mind that the soil conditions and the age of the penny can also be reflected in your readings. In damp soil, older pennies that have more copper in them will sometime ID as a 38 which is the same as what a dime will read. Also, I've seen issues where you just are not quite ground balanced properly have an effect on your ID.

Not to worry!! This is normal especially with certain coils and soil conditions. I have had good deep signals of 40-42 that turned out to be crummy memorials! Normally, my penny TID's are 34-38 but I always dig deeper 28-32's since they might be Indians
Good Luck

If only the Terra had E.Trac sounds you would be able to hear the targets on there own but the numbers are not very accurate anyway unless in air or on a stony beach.
