Xterra 705 question

Whatever do you mean? There is no 1 on an Xterra discrimination scale.

Also, size & mass play a part. A small thick piece of steel (like a 1" nut) will sound off in the non-ferrous range, but can be discerned by other tonal characteristics and/or methods.

I think you may mean Program 1 from the choice of 4 pre-set programs for discrimination. As LH writes ferrous/iron can read in the non ferrous ranges. That's where the fun begins!
You could look up a couple threads on identifying trash with 705s. There you'll read of the dd wiggle over a target while moving the coil toward yourself. You need to utilize multi tones and you'll hear a blend of tones when you come out of the detection field/ off the target edge. This indicates trash.
Look up the free down load on ML website Randy's "Understanding your X-Terra".
