xterra 705?

Not in my opinion.......http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,1894818,1895041#msg-1895041

thanks digger, that explains it,wasn't sure.been running all metal and targets seemed to jump around alot.will try zero disc, thanks once again, emubob

I ran zero discrimination during a hunt last weekend and it worked fantastic.

Try 2 tone when using no disc. Low tone is iron .

When you say 'zero disc' or 'no discrimination' are we talking all metal or a disc pattern with nothing notched? There is a difference and someone just picking up an Xterra might not know what you mean.

I was referring to a discrim pattern with nothing notched out. I modified the factory minelab coin pattern # 2. Also ran 4 tones and really liked it.

I've done that a few times but I seem to always revert back to AM. For some reason I feel like I'm missing something. I'll get over it.

When you turn the X-TERRA on, all the settings you used the last time you hunted are saved, with one exception. It will not turn back on to All Metal. It always sets up in the last Discrimination Pattern you used. So, in order to not have to worry about forgetting to switch to All Metal, I established one of my Discrimination Patterns to accept all notches. This way, when I turn on the detector, it sets up in a Discrimination Pattern with zero discrimination.

Yep...it was that information that you provided Digger that led me to try that pattern and I must say I'm liking it a lot. I nailed a twoonie(Canadian $ 2.00 coin) at 11" down in wet salt sand this past weekend and you could hear that coin loud and clear. My hunting partner was using a Whites IDX and could not get the signal amongst the iron. There was iron all around the area, but I waggled the coil away from the target and the coin signal dropped off clearly and quickly so I knew I had something good.

I'm not forgetting to do anything, I just get this feeling when I search in a disc pattern with no disc that I'm missing something, due to masking or who knows what. Its just me.
I have pattern 2 with nothing notched.
Like I said, I'll get over it, I just need to use it more. When I make some goods finds in that pattern I'll feel more confident with it.

There's nothing wrong with AM Bill.
I usually hunt in AM, and there only certain situations where I'll switch to a zero disc pattern, in which cases a smaller coil is often the better solution. A zero disc pattern increases the odds of missing a good target that's sharing the hole with junk.

Other than sometimes feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of sounds that come from searching in AM, I am so happy with some of the great finds that were sharing the hole with a family of nails. My other detectors probably would not have found the these coins and rings.
Some days though, I just get lazy and search in pattern 1, listening for the good signals. I figure I can always go back for more extensive searching.

Question, Hope it doesn't sound stupid. But how do you set a EXT 505 up for ) discrimination.

Here is an excerpt from Randy's book that explains it as concisely as it can be.

"Each X-TERRA offers a “factory preset” for the notch segments that are either accepted or rejected. But rest assured that each of the Patterns is easily changed to accept or reject any notch segments you desire. This is done by simply scrolling (+/- pad) to the number representing that specific notch segment, and clicking on the accept/reject pad."

BTW, I highly recommend that you go to the Minelab website and download Randy's FREE e-book "Understanding Your Xterra". You'll find a link to it in the FAQFAQ pinned thread at the top of this forum's page.

Terra 705, Thanks, got it. Good hunting.

I noticed I must slow down even more when using disc mode with nothing notched in really trashy sites. I can definitely hear a slight threshold null if swinging too fast, as if it's trying to more accurately place the target into a segment bin. It seems a tiny bit more stable (less jumpy) on the tones and ID#s. I still prefer to use AM with nothing notched.

AM, that's what I run in about 98% of the time. I'm old school,
