XY Visualization question

Just a simple question here: If the XY visualization screen is great for IDing bottlecaps in a trashy site with its "jumbled" display; then how come some older more corroded bottlecaps still sound like *and* read as, U.S. dimes or quarters? If the difference is that visible with the XY screen why is it not so with the audio or VDI?

The X-Y Visualization screen shows how the signal is being processed by the Deus. It is showing you a different piece of the signal being processed than what is used to drive the TID or audio responses.

In areas where you are getting frustrated by bottle caps, I have instructed users to try toggling into the X-Y option to check signals that could be either coins or rusted bottle caps. I know some will say there shoudl be an easier way to access the X-Y option but 3 taps to get to it and 3 taps to get back becomes second nature when needed.

Let me know if anyone wants more details on how this option can be used and how to best set it up

Any info you could provide would be great Andy.

Thank you Andy for your reply! I've got to the point now where I can ID bottlecaps 90% of the time by audio alone. I usually run the silencer in 2 at the trashy fairgrounds site and higher near the roller coaster area. Switching to 4 kHz is a great tool - I use that frequently on the deeper hits. Usually for me a jumpy VDI of 87-92 is a suspect steel bottlecap, and a quick 4 kHz unchanging VDI works like a charm!

But there is one area of the fairgrounds that I've never hunted - it used to be the boundary of the parking lot for 40 plus years and before that was the southern end of the old horse track. Ive done some quick sweeps of the area and the trash level is ridiculous - mostly bottlecaps and deep pull tabs - and I'm sure there are older coins under the trash. I may have to dig out most of the caps to be able to detect those deeper coins - not sure how much patience I will have with that but the site is easy accessable and not far from home. Ive seen 1930s maps of this area and it used to have a sidewalk - so the potential is great!

I would just turn up the silencer to try and blank out those caps a little easier but then the deeper coins will be missed - probably the best way would be to clear the surface trash first - bottlecaps have a fantastic ablility of masking deeper coins as evidenced from my coin garden!

Of course...I will keep all of you guys posted as to the progress!

I have had my XP for 3 months now and I love it. I just ordered your book so that I can learn it. Three weeks ago I was introduced to the XY screen and I have used it since. I go by the tones then verify with the screen and find the graph simple and pretty accurate. I know this was designed as a diagnostic tool and I am concerned of any drawbacks from using it in the field as opposed to say the horseshoe. I have heard comments on depth loss which I can't understand as your using the same program just a different screen. Thanks for any input in advance of getting your book in the mail. And a special thanks for your contributions to this great hobby.

The comment about depth was not that you will be loosing depth when using this display but rather the display becomes harder and ahrder to see as the targets get deeper . . . remember the length of the line is dependent on the signal strength so while you will get an audio response, you mighht need to break out a magnifying glass to see the actual display on the axis . . . . . again, it is a tool that is offered and for certain applications and user preferences it fills the bioll so to speak. When XP added the actual TID value to the screen and made it rmeain active as long as the unit was powered on in V3.X, it made this option much more useful than it had bee.

Hope this helps

Andy
