Yesterday's Finds with the EXII and X-Terra 50

I drove just less than an hour back to my old hunting grounds to an 1838 farmsite to test out the X-Terra 50 and of course use my EX II to see what I missed before. I've hunted this place to death with my CZ-70 and found at least 10 silver dimes including a 1901-S Barber and an R-7(50-70 known to exist) 1863 Civil War token from Eaton Rapids, MI. It's a virgin site that would get the pulse racing with any true TH'er BUT of course it's filled with square nails and large chunks of iron junk. When you dig, the site has mostly deep black soil that I'm not sure if I've ever got down to clay. The house was taken down piece by piece for later restoration with no remaining power lines. When you dig you never know what else might come up including lots of old blue and white china, yellowware, clay pipes etc..Anyway...I started out with the X-Terra 50 at 14 sensitivity with ground balance around 10. Hunted for awhile and managed to find a super 1911(33) wheatie about 6 inches along with a bunch of relics. It seemed to do well in the iron but I still need more time to develop an honest opinion. After about an hour, I decided to break out the EX II and dig any repeatable non iron signals. I dug alot of holes...mind you...I use an English gardner's spade at this site to dig 1x1x1 foot plugs because it's alot quicker and the place will be bulldozed someday soon anyway. The first coin I found was a key date 1911-S(07-24) Wheatie about 6 inches down 20 feet away from the other. I was then hunting near where the side porch steps were in the yard and got a fluty 00-28 signal more than half way down. I dug the plug which it was in and out pops a no date standing Liberty quarter, my third I've found(all with no date of course) in the last year. Mind you, I have been over this area tons of times with my CZ-70 and a CZ-3D. It was only about 40 degrees so after about an hour and a half I was done. After hunting this site with numerous machines(CZ-70, CZ-3D, CoinStrike as well), I still think that at old sites I would use my CZ-70 first to cover the area quicker to get the easier goodies before someone else does, then the X-Terra or EX II...just my opinion of course...with the CZ-70's 7 tones and icons, you pretty much know what's coming out of the ground before you dig...I'm still learning with the EX II. I also dug this hard black circular button like thing in one of the holes that says on one side; N R Co GOODYEAR'S PAT 1857...you just never know what you'll find...HH

Nice, Chris. Good post too...interesting tidbits. I know it's tough not to use the CZ. I find myslef pulling it out and using it and it never disappoints. But then I find myself wanting to go back to the Explorer II. I've become more and more comfortable with it the more I use it. I agree with your strategy of using the CZ first, then the Minelabs on a site like that. Sounds like a great site too...wish I had one like that to hunt at the moment. Still looking for the next "Barber House".

Keep 'em coming!

The button "like" thing is a button. A hard rubber button. It should say Pat. 1851. and probably had a hook that pulled out.

Ive only used my Explorer a few times but I am amazed at what Ive been finding. Not at the quality of finds but at the amount I can get in hunted out places. Most of the targets are very deep too. I also own a Coinstrike and 1266. They are both great detectors but the Explorer has them beat. Ive been really happy with it.

Thanks for the button info. I looked at it a little closer and saw that it was 1851 last night but I figured no one would notice the difference so I didn't post a correction...but you guys out there are good and very knowledgeable.:) I too am really liking the EX II. If I get a warmer day, I'm going back to the old farm to see what I find if I really concentrate and hunt slower in a grid. I almost liken the X-terra to the CZ-70 but the X-terra seems better in iron and with target separation...HH
