I am fixated on yet another goal. I am trying to reach 30,000 lifetime coins by the end of 2009. I figure I need to average 70 coins a hunt for the number of hunts I think I'll be able to get in before winter arrives. It has been, cold, snowy, and rainy lately too. I got out twice yesterday during two breaks in the weather and collected 94 coins. Despite low temps I managed a quickie this morning too. I hoped for 50 coins. I headed to my old favorite spot that I have really cleaned out. There is one small area where they had recently stockpiled all sorts of construction equipment that I have avoided because of all the small bits of junk metal. I hunted there. It was very trashy and I had only my big coil with me. I did find a fair amount of clad to start when I got a nice deep signal. 1961 dime. Next signal was nice too. 1964 dime. Next signal was nice too. Rusty nail. A fourth nice signal in a row was another 1961 dime. Why had I avoided this area? I worked it hard for another hour and found no more silver and not even a single wheat. I also got a 2000P Sac which is always a good find in my book. I would have hunted longer that the hour and 20 minutes I ultimately lasted if I hadn't been frozen about solid.

I think three silver coins in a row (even with the rusty nail thrown in) is a record for me. A nice surprise to go out expecting only clad and being surprised with silver coins. This site isn't all that old but I don't know what was there before. There are a few lessons here. One of those dimes indicated as a penny. Don't notch out pennies. EVER!

Bad weather for the next two days in the forecast. If I can't make it out tomorrow I'm going to find a needle a thread and patch up my trusty old find towel. You need to take care of your gear!

great hunt, chris, you will make your goal. you will do what you have to do to make it. we all know that.

My obsessive compulsive disorder is that obvious? I think I'll go wash my hands.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Take your time. You got a lifetime ahead of you. No point in making a contest out of it. Wait till you get to the point where you can't remember whether it's 200,000 or 400.000.

I'm trying hard to catch you. Can you feel my breath on the back of your neck? You know who I really used to compare my totals to? Steve. He and I were within about 500 coins of being equal when he passed so suddenly. He and I exchanged emails somewhat regularly and we were in a friendly, sometimes heated, competition.

How many do you really reckon it is for you? I know you started in the early 60s. Say 45 years ago. I figure 5,000-6,000 a year is a doable average per year. That's considering the type of equipment you were using way back when, the effects of age, health related slow downs like you had a few years back and having to take care of the missus. I'd guess you're sitting right around 250k. Add to that 1000-1500 silver coins. Maybe 500-750 gold rings. Perhaps 2500 silver rings, pins, chains, and charms. I could be low if you were half as addicted as I am when you started.

I've started saving some of those rusty nails for some reason. The only reason I'm looking forward to winter is so that some snowy weekend I can sort through all the relics and junk I've saved over the years and check it all out again.

Another great hunt. How close are you to your silver goal for the year, or have you already passed it?

Passed it, I suppose. I had a figure in my head back in August but it was too many. I like to find 1 silver coin for about every 300 clad coins dug. I'll beat that ratio for sure. Last year my silver production was awful and I actually found almost as many gold items as silver coins. This year I set out to fix that and I'm very satisfied with my progress. FWIW almost 2% of all my finds this year have been wheat cents. That's pretty good when you consider I spend most of my time looking for clad and jewelry.
