So my other student in tow is a young man with an intense interest in this hobby. Last year his parents bought him a Garrett Ace 250, and recently a cheap carrot knockoff pinpointer, but nothing else, just that. I worked with his father and he was a student in my wife’s 2nd class a few years back. We only made it out once last year but we did make a few clad coin finds.
Yesterday we made an afternoon of it. Went to a big intramural sports field and took off on a wandering pattern. Yes, he dug aluminum wire, beaver tails, zincolns , etc but one has to start somewhere right? I hit on a shallow quarter so I called him over. He correctly identified it on his screen so I said dig it. Bingo! His first bigger coin! Now the poor little guy doesnt have a trowel or a shovel so I stayed kinda close. He was still getting mostly pennys and trash but did find a dime and another quarter. Meanwhile I was getting dimes, nickels, and copper pennys…….
We moved over by some baseball diamonds with back to back cage style backstops. I was scanning for coins and jewelry and he was learning that getting too close to the wire backstop was problematic. At one point I noticed he was excavating a rather large hole so curiosity struck me. He said he was on a strong dollar reading ! Ok, lets let him dig most likely a chunk of iron and a learning moment achieved. Nope, the little dude pulled out a really old yellow brass water faucet from close to 10” down!!! At first he was a bit disappointed but when I told him it could be valued at $5-6 scrap cash his eyes lit up!!!
Not sure who taught who what lesson but how many times have I been over that area? Almost three hours having fun with a very nice mannered young man, priceless.
