Manual sensitivity and Noise cancel ?

K.B.

Member
I recently read a post that got me think'n. When detecting with your sensitivity in manual mode, notice your number then manually go through the 11 channels. Does any peculiar channel allow you to raise your sensitivity while still maintaining stability ? What are your thoughts on this ?

My partner can't run a manual of 27 on any of the lower channels without his detector (ETRAC) sounding off every few seconds....I told him to manually up and lower and check each channel to see which one would be the quietest ...a stable detector.....he ended up on channel 8 with not ever a peep at manual 27.....yes...there is a quieter channel you can run with greater sensitivity and stability....you got to do some work yourself to find it as no one can tell you which one to use for your area or conditions. He actually does get greater depth and stability on this channel 8 with no falsing.

Very interesting...

Very interesting...
Hello TED S !
I was really surprised at how quiet his detector was....If he sat it down on the ground and came over to talk to me , we could hear it chattering away from twenty feet away when we were hunting before this change.

My SE used to chatter a lot. I posted this in the Explorer forum some time ago. I carry my cell phone with me and have it on airplane mode. It cut down a lot of the chatter. Depending on power lines in the area I usually run sensitivity between 24-26 manual.

Sounds like you got it setup about right ....you can always run thru the channels manually ans see if you find a quieter channel....but if it works for you ,that will be enough sensitivity to get the job done.

I will remember the the cell phone tip.....sounds like a good solution to emi....if you want or haven't done yet...read the post I put on the etrac forum for quick mask....from What i've heard it seems to maybe work on the explorers too.

I've never had issues with a cell phone, in all of my years of detecting with any phone. I don't "push" sensitivity to the edge though. Etrac or Explore SE, I always made a modest power setting no higher than 23 "manual." These FBS units hit so deep and accurate with about any sensitivity setting even in the teens.

We aren't missing the deep stuff, it's masking. You crank the sensitivity to the edge, then expect spurious RF in the air, and it will make instability. There's never been a time before this when radio frequency were so spurious. There is a lot of Rf noise and with 5G? I say to not push your sensitivity.

I just can't find I've ever had a single issue with my cell phones.

That is interesting, too! I didn't think 24-26 manual was pushing it that hard. I have a Galaxy S-5 phone if that makes a difference.

minelab has the auto sensitivity feature that "states suggested sensitivity"....if you run in auto , it will start at 16. but will increase to a higher level according to your noise cancel and conditions....
After you run it in auto for awhile check the sensitivity number.....that will give you the suggested manual level to run according to minelab. Mine always hits 25 or above in most conditions...I am almost certain if you run in the teens, you would miss the deep stuff...I have hit coins at manual 27...that at factory coins mode suggested manual sensitivity of 22 would not hit. From what I have experienced a manual sensitivity of 27 is about all any coil can do....Anything above it just adds false signals and a very unstable detector ...and a 28 and up sensitivity doesn't add any more depth to a coil..try a 27...on your quietest noise cancel channel.
As far as interference....MY etrac can run on channel 2.... my hunting partner has to use channel 8.....quite a difference....."GO GET EM"

How about setting manual 27 what I consider the highest level of sensitivity a coil will best perform at....and start at noise cancel 1 and up it to 2 if noisy and so on to find a quiet channel....if no quiet channel do the same on manual 26 sensitivity.....ect......you will find your highest possible level of sensitivity that way and what channel can handle your most sensitivity....this may take awhile, but it would work.

I agree 100%! It will be a while before I can test this theory. It will be hot and toasty for a few days.

Thanks Ted...It worked for my partner so it may also work for you....nothing worse than swinging a detector that falses on swing or at each end of a swing....it is hard enough without all that going on...
Hope it helps you out and it has been a real pleasure talking to you.

Thank you! A pleasure here too! I always run mine in manual. Lot of the experienced Explorer guys have written of deptg loss when going to auto.
