May be the strangest cache I've ever found...

We went for a 4x4 drive in a national forest here in Colorado today, and ended up driving way back into a tough 4-wheel drive only trail until it dead-ended.
At about 9,000 ft above sea level, the weather and scenery were perfect.

When we stopped where the trail dead ended, we could see something very shiny reflecting just a little further up, so we got out and walked a short distance to investigate.
I haven't got the first clue as to how, or why....but there were many hundreds of pennies scattered all over the forest ground, over an area of maybe 25' x 25'.

After we picked them up and brought them home, we cleaned and counted over 1,400 pennies, and 1 nickel, lol!
Over 400 were copper, from the 60's and 70's, and many of those still had some nice luster .... as though perhaps they had been uncirculated.

I've found caches of coins (far more valuable) before, but never have I found this many coins in one outing .... and all without a metal detector.
I'm still scratching my head, trying to figure out the story of how/why they were there.

Here's a pic of the cleaned coins. It's hard to see how thick the pile is, but it's about 3" high.
HH,

Now that is wild. It would be fun to know the story behind that. Apparently, who ever tossed them had a four wheel drive as well. Need to see if my wife will let me use her Jeep and do some exploring, too. HH jim tn

Wow, that is a crazy cashe, congratulations!

Could it be, just maybe, Susquatch poops pennies???? I mean as long as we are contemplating theories.....

What a cache!!

🤔🤔 Maybe a thief broke into someone’s house and stole a piggy bank and other valuables. Then the thief went someplace secluded to look over the stolen goods. When the thief realized They were all pennies, they got mad and dumped them out.

Jim, the whole time we were picking them up, (and then driving back,) we were trying to come up with a reasonable theory .... but drew a blank.

BTW, if anyone's interested in how to recover hundreds of pennies (or dimes I suppose) without a good container or pouch; You can easily fill up empty plastic mountain dew bottles with pennies .... they just do clear/fit the opening.
However, we found out that once they're full you can't easily get the coins back out again. You have to cut the plastic bottles open.

Very wierd maybe a bank robbery & pennies thrown away or dropped from a plane or helicopter? If only they could talk! Ma Betty

I lean towards the home theft by some adolescents...grabbed a piggy bank or jar full of coins. Drove to your location before assaying their goodies and then discovered they weren't as lucky as they had assumed...OR...pulled out the silver (larger denominations) and subsequently fled the scene. Oh well, supposedly the govt. (US Mint/Fed Reserve)? are short of change. See if they'll pay you a premium for their return. ;)

Sounds logical & after breaking the container &/or emptying the contents onto the ground, they didn't want to pick up all those newer pennies by knowing what were valuable & what were not so much! LAZY don't you think & probably in a hurry, too, not wanting to get caught with the stolen goodies?! Kids throw pennies at each other when playing in parks--sometimes could find rolls of them or enough to roll up! Maybe they heard you coming & that is when they took off! Ma Betty
