charge of hf coil

Waterdog

Well-known member
I have a HF coil that blinks while operating, but when charging it stays constant on, and never goes to blink while charging telling me it is fully charged. So today I went out and left it discharge till it showed one bar on the coil. Now it is over at a friends house being charged, maybe it is my charger ?
Anyone else with this issue ?

Waterdog, might be a problem w/charging clip. It seems like it is charging (solid light) but maybe not . It usually takes 1 to 2
hours to charge so are you leaving it on the charger long enough to get the slow blinking? I've had my Deus since April 2012
still running on original batteries. I'm currently on my 3rd chg. clip. The first one burnt off one of the spring-loaded contacts
only being on charge for 2 hrs. That was in the first month of purchase, so I got a new one at no cost from the dealer. On down the
road this one had the contact just fall out, lost. So I bought the next one and a few months ago same thing happened. Now I
just have it rigged with a short piece of solid copper wire (22 ga) stuck in the hole where the missing contact was. It works but
I have to be careful when clipping it on. I love my Deus but this chg. setup is a weak link. I still run an LF 9" coil but I thought
I heard about the clips not fitting the HFs very well? Don't the HF have the external battery ? Might make sure connections are
snug. Could be a battery problem too, I would guess. Hope you figure it out! I'll probably switch to an HF early next year and
am looking into the aftermarket chg. clips, there's a couple out there. Good luck, sir!
HH and Merry Christmas okie

Cal, are you talking about replace the battery ? How hard is it to change the coil and the controler battery? My XP is about 6 years old, still takes a charge but don't work like it used to.

I dont know I let Moe at the service center change my remote. The HF coil battery is no problem.

Thanks Cal, how much to change the remote, if you don't care to tell me. I have the 9" HF coil and know it would be ease. I was talking the LF coils.

You should be able to use up to2.4 amp without harming anything. You can find them on ebay. The ones you get with a phone are usually 1/2 amp. If you use the Deus 3 way wire and plug in more than 1 item to charge at a time you need at least 1 amp.

Deus charger is one amp. Instruction manual says don't use a different charger than what Deus supplies. That's a small battery and no need for too much power in the charger unless you want to replace the battery sooner. Charger circuitry varies with different chargers. Use the Deus charger only.

As to the original poster, the charger circuitry senses when the battery is near full and cuts back to a trickle charge. It's possible the charger got tricked into thinking this.

The difference between the the 1 amp and the 2.4 amp is the 2.4 amp produces the same voltage as the 1 amp but allows you to charge more than 1 item without losing the devices designated voltage output. On the Deus you can charge 3 items before you fall under the required voltage needed. Make sure the one you choose is not one of the new high voltage fast chargers. Just ensure the one you pick is the same voltage output as the one in the Deus manual.

Recommended charge rate is 0.8C (with a range of 0.5C - 1C) so if you charge all three at the same time 650 mah times 3 is 1950 times 0.8C equals about 1.5 amps recommended. As soon as one or more get fully charged the remaining current all goes to the remaining battery which takes longest to charge. If you run a 2.4 amp charger now you are charging at 1.8C or 3.69C (instead of the recommended 0.8C). You can charge at over 1C but it will shorten the lifespan.

With the Deus charger when the coil gets charged first, the RC and headphones total 1300 mah remaining (1.3ah). At the recommended charge rate of 0.8C (1.3 x 0.8C) would be 1.04 amps (just what the Deus charger puts out). But if you only are charging one unit 650 mah (0.650 ah) would be charging at 1.5C (1 amp divided by 0.650ah equals 1.52C). So you are already over the limit by nearly double the recommended 0.8C. I could see if someone contantly is charging only one unit at a time it is going to shorten the battery lifespan even with the Deus charger, and I suspect this has happened to some people. So really you want to be charging at least two units at a time.

I went back and looked in my ORX manual and it showed you could use a 5 amp charger at 1 amp or greater. Don’t see why the Deus should be any different but if they say something different in the Deus manual let me know.

Sorry I meant a 5 volt charger.

I admit I don't know the insides of the Li-Po batteries they use--there might be a limiting circuit. Deus manual says use only their charger and don't leave it on for more than three hours. I just think you really want to follow what it says in the manual. Anything else you are risking doing damage.

I wonder then why the different instructions for the ORX. They don’t supply a charger only the cord and they give you a list of company chargers they say you can use along with inferring similar chargers can be used. I mean we are charging the same equipment why aren’t the instructions the same.

Had same problem so I ordered a new battery. Same thing happened again. Come to find out all mine was is the connection from the battery to the coil cable was somehow not making good connection and maybe making mine not charge as it should. I could hunt a few hours then my would show no coil like it does when battery is dead or go to one bar. One day it showed no coil and I happened to take the battery loose and plugged it back in and it had a full charge. Now I check that often and have no problem.
