Got told to leave a spot today!!

Thought i would try detecting at our local post office lawn today. The woman in charge came out and told me i had to leave and when i asked her why she said " you might fall and hurt yourself". I responded " what if i fall and hurt myself walking up the post office steps"? She again told me i had to leave, so i did. But before i left she told me she had called the postmaster, who was off today, and he told her to make me leave. I asked her is there a written law that says i can't detect, as his opinion isn't law. I asked her to find out what the written law is concerning metal detecting. She said she will find out early next week. I sent an email to uspsoig hotline asking them to send me a copy of said law. What are your thoughts on this? HH Jim

Wow! You do realize they have their own police force? They could easily have arrested you for destroying property ( with your digger / shovel)
And for carrying a “dangerous weapon” = your digger / shovel. Consider yourself extremely lucky they didn’t show up. The postal police could certainly ruin your day.
The Postal Inspection Service enforces over 200 federal statutes related to crimes that involve the postal system, its employees, and its customers.

I suppose, I've lived here most of my adult life and known the postmaster for years. It is what it is.

Since you know the postal worker extremely well, why didn’t you approach and ask them first? A first introduction can make all the difference.

Yup. My town has a population of about 2300, everybody knows everybody. Someone exerting their authority.

Never really thought about it as we know each other.

I really can’t find anything in this that in any way covers metal detecting. If anyone reads something I didn’t catch, please point it out to me. HH Jim
Destroying USPS property ( digging) and carrying a weapon. A weapon doesn’t necessarily mean a gun. Your digger can be classified as a “weapon”
