Extra coils for APEX

I'd like to see someone air/field/test-garden test Garrett's Raider and Ripper coils to see what kind of improvements there are to determine if it's worth dropping the $ to pick up either one. Ohio has a lot of minerals and iron in the sites where I hunt, and either or both of these coils might be beneficial.

It'll be interesting to see if Nel or someone else comes out with a concentric design.

Search coils for the Garrett Apex currently has us limited to a Double-D design only. I have shared my wishs with the factory, and mentioned on several forum posts, that I would really like to see them make their 4½" Concentric 'sniper' coil for the Apex, and if I could wish bigger, I wouldn't mind something like a round 7" Concentric coil. For me anad my needs, however, a smaller coil, like the 4½", would make a really good fit in my detector & coil set-up.

To me the 5X8 'Ripper' DD is a terrific general-purpose coil and stays mounted on my primary-use Apex. It fits in and around most places and works well in common trash. The 8½X11 'Raider' DD coil provides me the bigger-size coil for a beach, plowed field, or other areas that are more open with less masking trash so that a detector can take advantage of a bit more depth of detection. The standard 'Viper' DD is an OK coil for many people, I am sure, but the 6X11 size is too big for most of the trashy and brushy locations I like to hunt, making the 'Ripper' the better choice, and in open areas the 'Raider' has the wider profile to help enhance increased coverage and depth.

I do have a 3rd Apex and on that I currently have the aftermarket NEL 'Sharp' 5" DD coil mounted to help handle the really tight confines around heavy brush, building rubble, and other situations. It works OK, but I would prefer to have a Garrett-made 4½" Concentric on the end of that rod.

You asked about "what kind of improvements" the Ripper and Raider have over the stock Viper coil. As I stated, they make the detector more comfortable and able to work in and around brushy sites and very littered sites better, with the Ripper, and gives me a better feel or comfort level in the more open and sparse-target locations with the Raider. All of them have a quick response and recovery and work well in Iron Nail contaminated places.

Monte, since you have those coils on the Apex, I have a question that could use your expertise with the Apex and the various coils.

I have a late 1800's spot that I spent a lot of time with the Apex equipped with the Viper coil I have dug a lot of targets from this site. I've dug a couple of silver dimes and an 1898 IHP, as well as numerous wheaties and 10's of clad coins, tokens, buttons and shotgun shell caps, and of course junk. The spot is loaded with iron square nails, and looks to have been back filled with soil over the years as sidewalks and the driveway were poured with concrete. The soil is unusually high around the foundation of buildings on the site.

Assuming the Apex is the only detector option at the moment, would you go over it with an Apex equipped with the Ripper coil to work around the iron, or with a Raider coil to get deeper in the soil? Or Both?

Your comments are much appreciated, Thanks

Nel and detech coils now available for apex

No sense using the larger 'Raider' coil if there is a lot of iron nails or other trash which would cause good-target masking. I'd first work the site with the 5X8 DD 'Ripper' coil and recover all that I could. Then, depending upon how dense the iron nails are, or how much other debris might be there, or building rubble or dense brush, I would then grab my 5" NEL equipped Apex and slowly and methodically work it again. I would be wishing for a round 4½" Concentric or something close to that to be in use, but until we have a good Concentric for the Apex, the smaller DD's will have to do.

Thanks, Monte. I suspected that working it with the Ripper or similar, then something else, but thought it would be worth asking. I don't have any extra coils for the Apex, and the all of the finds are being given back to the owner, so best coil size selection is important from a monetary standpoint.

I think the fill soil is causing trouble as well, as far as the depth of older targets is concerned. I hit this spot pretty hard last fall but the soil was kind of dry. It will be wet now with the snow melt; I hope the Apex can get a little deeper to see what else I might have missed the first time.
