Scaling from the large cent, it appears the piece is 3-3/4 long and 2-1/4" wide across the face? From the large cent, assume you are in the US?

From the shape and size, was gonna suggest possibly a piece broken from a cast brass pipe tomahawk, but it would have a tapered top and bottom view profile, not the boat shaped profile of your piece.

Not sure how this makes any sense, but at the link below from Britain, a small bronze age axehead.
Remarkably similar shape and size, similar boat profile, similar patina and texture.

Another similar bronze age flat axe, slightly smaller, also from England, Suffolk County Council Archaeology Service. Also with a similar flaw on the back edge.

Early_Bronze_Age_Flat_Axe_(FindID_246064).jpg

Early Bronze Age flat axehead

An incomplete copper alloy flat axehead of Early Bronze Age date. The axe is small, plain and flat with a lenticular long profile and a broad blade. It has a narrow butt that has a large semi-circular perforation that is probably the result of a casting flaw rather than a deliberate break or post-depositional damage. The blade end is slightly blunt and the entire axe head has a dark green patina with very small patches of copper alloy corrosive products. The axe measures 71.33mm (2.8") in length , 48.23mm (1.8988189") in width , 9.16mm (.36") in thickness (at the middle), and weighs 133.22g. This flat axe is an example from the Early Bronze Age as it has straight sides rather than flanged sides, which develop later in the Early Bronze Age (see for example Needham, 1979). This suggests a date of c.2200-2000 BC for the current example.

Thanks for the help!
I had an archeologist and 2 of her colleagues look at it. She said it is a copper celt that dates to 5000BC and maybe even older. An extremely rare find especially in my area! She believes it is made from Lake Superior copper

I was going to donate it to the place where I met the archeologist (a native american society which focuses on local native history) but I decided to hold onto it for the time being.

As I was leaving the one lady said PLEASE DONT SELL IT! I'll never sell it this thing is priceless

Good for you, yes priceless! Please post any additional info you find out about it and if and when you find a good home for it. Can't imagine any museum in the country not wanting it for their collection. A find of a lifetime, good job, the bigd81!

I definitely will and thanks for the help getting this IDed! I don't know if I'll ever top this find. I had no idea it could be as old as it is. Once I decide to pass it on it will go to the place that I took it to today. I knew it was special and rare from seeing their reactions and facial expressions

I think that the dating that they have done is too old (in my opinion) since the oldest data that we have of bronze / copper axes in America dates from 1200 BC in Peru and from there they were distributed to Mexico.
I think that this piece should be studied in depth by experts and given the importance of the finding, it should be in a museum.

Excellent hunting !!

Greetings

Not sure what you’re posting but its all foreign language for me……..

It is a collection of bronze axes, returned by the US to Mexico.

Greetings.

You might want to check out "Old Copper Culture", the Milwaukee Museum has some good info on this, there are quite a few other websites as well (also might want to search "Old Copper Complex". The style looks to be consistent with examples they show dated to 4000 BC and some date earlier. The website for the Wisconsin Historical Society is pretty good too. Just some stuff I looked up.

I was unaware of this information. It is very interesting, it will have to be read in depth. Thanks.

Hahahaha I think I'll take an archeologist who has studied all over the world and has done digs in the Hopewell region of Ohio over some John Doe on a forum.

PS check out OLD COPPER COMPLEX "since the oldest data we have of bronze/copper axes in America dates from 1200 BC" hahahaha you're clueless

That is very cool. you hit the lick
This find still blows my mind never in a million years did I think I'd find a piece that might be over 7000 years old. When I get back in the field this winter I'm going to do some digging just for fun where I found it and see if any other artifacts are unearthed.

I found a Fugio at the other end of this field so there is a ton of history there.

No. I have not said in the US I have said in America. America is very big. Do not believe yourself the navel of the world.
As for not having a clue, hahaha. I am based on scientific studies, not opinions and opinions are like ass. Everybody has one.
And since I see that they only accept opinions and / or articles written only in English, well, nothing ... everything for you

I've been in this forum for more years than many of you. I've never had a problem, but from two days to today, it seems that annoying ...
