Whites Spectrum XLT

I was given a Whites Spectrum XLT. It did not have the battery compartment for the AA batteries. Found a battery compartment online just to see if the unit will work. If it works, can y'all give me any tips.

Use it in preset programs for a while before you start tweaking programs, get used to the detector first , a great old detector gets decent depth and accurate id on good targets,if target id bounces around broadly it’s likely trash but can be occasionally a coin on edge also if it’s getting coin readings and trash readings back and fourth,I’d recommend dig everything the first few days of using and you will learn what tones and vdi numbers to dig or not to dig

I received the battery compartment that holds 8 AA batteries, The unit is dead. Took the unit apart and it appears it was left outside for a while. Found a dirt and corrosion in the control box.

Check the battery prongs on the circuit board they break off and also bend inwards and battery doesn’t make contact also check the ribbon (wire) connection box and screen you can carefully unhook them and check for corrosion, pick up a can of contact cleaner from auto parts store and spray really good and let dry before trying just be careful and not get any on the painted surfaces it will eat the paint off

I am always looking for a project if you cannot get it going and want to sell it.

I have a nice XLT, but the screen is orange looking. I think the back light is week or something, you still can see all the VDI's and works good. I think i will sell it and get me a coil for my MXT.

Dose anyone know if the back light can be fixed, Can there be a new bulb put in ?
The screen is more than likely going out the back light will either work or not ,usually no in between, what are you asking for it I’m looking for a complete whites shaft for a project,Ive had a xlt for many years

Hi Badd427, the face comes on and works find, but it is just it has a line across the middle. It is like yellow looking, i still can see the VDI's and everything on the screen, i was just thinkback light but could be screen. Can that be replaced? The XLT is in very good condition, every thing works like it should, just that line and yellow looking. Thanks flintstone

Yes a line across the screen is definitely the start of the screen getting bad,if it’s left in the heat especially inside a hot vehicle it’s gonna get worse really fast, the replacement screen and labor on mine 14yrs ago was $150 plus the shipping to them and back to me

Thanks Bad, i will just use it like it is and if it quits i will sell it for parts. I have a Eagel 11sl that works well, i can use the coils from that i think. Are they bouth 6.9?
