Heartbreaker NOT!!!

In the wet sand a solid 77 VDI, loud and clear, three scoops and in the hole, a big old gold chain, my pacemaker skipped a beat. I rinsed it off and started looking for a mark and BAM I see 14K. I stuck it in the bag the sun was just coming up I would get a better look at it when the sun comes up. After 30 minutes I pull it out to get a better look and it looked like corrosion on the clasp and parts of the chain. I pulled out the magnet and no part of the chain stuck to it, so I was feeling a little bit better about it. I will order an acid tester when I get home to find out for sure. In addition, I stumbled on this sterling bracelet surface find in the dry sand, another great day metal detecting. Any advice good or bad?

Cool find, best of luck with it

OL 14K usually stands for “overlay” 14K. So a thin layer of 14K gold over copper, brass or silver. It’s still real gold but just a thin layer. I send chains like that to the smelter for melt value since there is enough gold to equal a gram or a bit less which pays me a few $$$. It all adds up the way gold prices are now.

Great finds!!!

OL, another spin on plated gold. I have found plenty of gold and as soon as you see it you know if it's the real deal, I tried to convince myself it was gold because it was marked 14K.

Yeah gold is funny never go by what you read even the acid kits are fooled by heavily plating best is to go to a coin shop that has the handheld gold testers I did with a ring that was marked 24k but I already could tell it was just by the color guy I know found this chain 18k insane find but just by the color he knew he hit pay dirt!
