I need some help on this bayonet....

fwcrawford

Well-known member
First off.... I did not find this and do not know any history about it other than a guy I know found it while removing some items from a shed to take to the dump.
I have tried to look up some and many are similar in looks and dimensions to this one, but some similar to it have a U. S. stamp on the neck which this one lacks, but it does have what appears to be a "V" and perhaps an "I" and below the I looks like some kind of design.
Here are the dimensions"
Total length 20 7/8"
Blade length 17 1/2"
Tube length 2 5/8"
Tube diameter O.D. 1"
Could this be Civil War era or later?
I have no idea if it was dug up at some point. or left out in weather.. It seems to be in too good of condition to have been dug up.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Looks civil war to me. Possibly French M1769 or M1771 according to AI. Nice relic anyway! My nephew dug a bayonet that's in excellent condition for being dug. Near the Wilderness Battlefield. Good luck hunting.

As nice as it is. Could it be a first reproduction ?
Like late 1800'$ when collecting desires were really taking off.

Either way.
I'd love to find that.

Though finding myself frozen on top of some mountain holding a 50 lb gold nugget would be Nice too.
I really have no idea, but where it was at, there is an old house that dates back to 1860, and I am sure the property this came from was all part of that at one time.
While I may never find out for sure, I feel like this piece came from somewhere on that property or old house, since dates back to the Civil war era.

Still an Incredible find.
I'd be all dreamy eyed finding that one.

Mine too…. Wish I knew more about the background of it.
I have about the same story to tell. Years ago a close friend of ours gave me a Bayonet that came from her father's old barn. She did not know the history of this piece whether it was handed down from family or what. The bayonet was in good shape, but was missing the swivel ring. It was stamped US and I did some research on it, and it was a war period bayonet. The way I see it, whether we dug them or not, they are a relevant piece of CW History. I'm proud to have this in my collection as I'm sure you feel the same way about yours. The fact too that they weren't in the ground for over 160 years means they were in much better condition. Congrat's on a great addition to your collection!

That is amazing…. Very similar origins as to how we both obtained them.
Yes, I am very happy to have this piece of history in my humble collection!!
Luckily the guy that gave it to me realized what it was before taking it to the dump along with other items that day!!
Do you have a positive ID of the model yours is?
According what I, this was the first model that utilized the locking ring.
Most but not all bayonets after that also utilized the ring.
Yours may date earlier than the one I have, and may not have had the ring
The link that was sent to me a few posts up by “Picketwire” really helps identify the types of of bayonets out there..
I’d like to see a photo of yours if you have time to post it..

I'll post a Pic. Of my bayonet later today.

fwcrawford, here is a Pic. of my bayonet. I made the Pic. through the glass of my case. I was being lazy trying to keep from pulling it out of my case. I hope you can see it good enough. The little card at the bottom is a description of the bayonet. We are both lucky in that we were able to obtain these two the way we did. I'm sure I feel the same as you about wishing to have known more about the personal History of these about who carried them, where these were carried, etc., but still they are pieces of History Saved and Preserved. I will most likely never dig one of these, but I did find the top portion of one years ago. Again, Congrat's to you on a very nice artifact and piece of CW History.

That bayonet is in killer condition!!
Very interesting history behind it and the firearm it was used on.
If only these two bayonets could talk, what a story they could tell.
Thanks for posting photos of it!
HH,
Felix

Thanks for posting your picture of your bayonet along with the story as well. When I was given this bayonet it was wrapped in a very old oil cloth as I remember. This was back in the mid 90's. It led me to believe that our friends Dad knew that this was a piece of History and did what he thought he could do to protect it.
