Looking back at my metal detecting adventures over the years, I have a time period that sticks out. The early 2000s to 2020. So I got wondering why. What made this time so special?
We've all contemplated that question of how to improve our finds-to-time hunting ratio. Unless you're new to the hobby, then you just seek the best returns for your time.
I'm at that point where I've hunted my small;l town area for over 50 years, and have pretty much cleaned out the easy stuff. Now age has limited my ability to spend the house in the field I used to, so making the best of my time is essential. Hence, the reason I look back at my past better than usual runs of luck. The short answer, for me, is time. The start of the third millennium was so good to me because I spent more time looking at that point. At first, I thought it could have been the detectors I used, the places I looked, or the good Lord just smiling on me, but in the end, I realized it was the time I spent in the hunt. Of course, all of these things contributed to my luck, but when I analyzed all my data, it was the time I spent looking that paid off so well.
Now I face the dilemma of not only having a well-hunted location(s), but my age has limited my time. The only thing I have going for me now is experience. Knowing where to look for what I'm after. I can go hunting for 30 minutes, about my limit at this time, and still come home with far more keepers than junk. Yes, having a good detector has helped, but knowing how and where to use it is key.
Just a note in my detecting experience.
