Flying eagle out of the heavy iron

coinspader

Well-known member
There is a spot in the park I hunt where there used to be an old round building that was built in the 1800's and was torn down in the fifties, lots of square nails. So I took the D2 up there to see what I could find. Well a got a non ferrous chirp out of the heavy nails, the VDI was inconsistent jumping from the 40's to the low 80's but spent most of its time in the mid 70's so I thought "oh great another pull tab" but it sounded pretty deep so I went for it, got down to the length of the probe and the pinpointer was pretty useless in all that iron so I grabbed the Deus and scanned over the spoil and bingo loud and clear low to mid eighties. The coin is pretty worn but I can make out the eagle image and the date looks like 1853, the reverse isn't to bad either . Happy to find it, I almost didn't dig it thinking it was a pull tab or can slaw.

Great find!!!!
They sure do not show up very often!
I think they were only minted 2-3 years from 1856-1858 I believe, so your date should be in line with these dates.
In 1853, large cents were still being minted.

I bet the round building was part of a Chautauqua camp. They were all the rage from the 1870s-1900s. Round buildings were their hallmark. I consider those who gathered there were the original Hippies. Read about it.

Nice FE cent. I’ve never found one. I wonder how much more is hiding in that heavy iron?
